THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12,1997 Bly th Atoms take WOAA title Going into the third game in a best-of-five series, tied at a game a piece, the Blyth Atoms took on Stephen Twp., March 6. Blyth broke the ice in the third period, putting the puck across the line for the first time. Trevor Koehler scored at 10:17. With the first goal out of the way, Blyth's offense got fired up. Cody Anderson scored a minute later, with assistance by Ryan McClinchey. McClinchey paired up with Koehler, with only 34 seconds remaining, to pop in Blyth's third. Markus Redmond topped off the scoring in the final seconds. Justin Peters earned the shutout. With a game in hand, Blyth trav­ elled to Stephen Twp., March 8. with the hopes of ending the scries. Tyler Kcmighan, assisted by Neil Salverda and Drew Crawford struck at 9:11 of the middle frame. Anderson, with the help of Kcmighan put the Blyth squad up by two. Stephen Twp. would not let the championship be taken that easily as they fought back with two goals of their own, at 4:11 of the second and 8:49 of the third. Into overtime, there was end-to- end action with spectacular goal­ tending at both ends. The game remained tied until, at the 1:33 mark, McClinchey picked up the puck and carried it deep into the Stephen Twp. zone. With the goalie forced to make a chest save, the rebound fell in front where Kernighan wired it to the top left comer. That play captured the WOAA South Division Championship for the Blyth squad. Captain Koehler was presented with the championship plaque and each player received crests to mark their accomplishment. The team ended the season with 21 wins, three losses and one tie. The goals against were 31 while they scored 121. Peters earned a goals against average of 1.24. Coach Doug McClinchey con­ gratulated his team for the terrific season and thanked trainers Ken Hesselwood and Lyle Campbell, Assistant Coach Jeff Peters and helpers Chad Haggitt, Don Stewart and all others who were involved. Covering the netBulldogs play out thriller In the third game of a best-of- five consolation playoff series, Blyth Novice Bulldogs travelled to Hensail, March 5. The opponent struck fast and furious, jumping to a two goal lead by the end of the first period. They lopped up the score with another early in the third before Blyth took action. The Bulldogs turned the contest into a real thriller, scoring two in the last three minutes of the game. They came close to getting the tying goal with a lot of pressure right up to the final buzzer. Luke Anderson and Darren Austin scored for Blyth. Darcey Cook and Anderson earned points for the assists. Goalie Jeffrey Elliott once again held his squad in the game with excellent saves at crucial points, said Coach Steve Cook. The outcome of the next game was no better for Blyth. Though they got on the board early with goals by Austin and Anderson, the defense could not hold off the Hensall attack. The visitors scored four times in the third period to take the lead, eventually the win and the series, seven points to one. Brett Bean popped in one more to bring the final score to 4-3 for Hensall. The Bulldogs moved onto the Teeswater tournament, March 8, where they came up against Bay- Novices meet their match In the consolation finals against Zurich, the Brussels Novice squad met their match, March 7. The team could just not do any­ thing right, being trounced by Zurich 15-0. The second game, the following day, saw a much-improved team take to the ice. The game was tied at one after two periods with great goaltending by Kyle Gibson. The team had three bad minutes during the final period, allowing Zurich to score three during that time. Brussels took the 5-1 loss. Andrew McDonald, assisted by Kyle Proctor, scored the only Brus­ sels goal. field. It was a tough first game for the squad as Bayfield downed them 7- 2. Bean scored both goals for Blyth while Austin (two) and Josh Albrcchtas captured the assists. "Darcey Cook saw action between the posts, doing a remark­ able job," said Coach Steve Cook, "seeing more rubber than workers in the Goodyear plant." The puck was flying in the sec­ ond game of the tournament as Blyth took to the ice against Keady. The team struck quickly and often, building a 3-1 lead through the first and taking a 6-3 lead into the third. Goals were scored by Bean (two), Austin (four) and Anderson (two). The assists were picked up by Chris Bernard, Orie Falconer, Austin, Cook, Anderson, Albrech- tas, Sidney Slotegraaf and Bean. The 8-3 win put Blyth into the consolation finals. In the final contest, Blyth met a very strong opponent. A skilled Ripley team took Blyth 10-1. Elliott did a good job in net, turn­ ing away many more good scoring opportunities. Anderson, with the help of Cook and Austin, put the puck in the Rip­ ley net. The Bulldogs had a great time at the tournament, bringing home a banner as consolation runners-up. Blyth Bantam goalie Dean Wilson shows oft his net- minding agility as he reaches to make the save in front of his team's goal during the WOAA playoff action on Saturday against Creemore. The home team went on to win the series. Bantams on to OMHA Brussels Atoms take home a win Brussels Atoms met Bayfield in exhibition play, March 5. Brussels got on the board first when Brandon Blake slid one over the line. Kyle Stephenson and Devon Blake assisted on the play. Bayfield evened the score before the end of the frame. A goal by Sean Hoegy put Brus­ sels into the lead for a short time until Bayfield put two past the net- minder. Brandon Blake assisted on Hoegy's marker. Down 3-2 going into the third the Brussels offense exploded, blasting four past the Bayfield goalie while the Brussels netminder allowed only one. Scoring in the third, for Brussels, were: Scott Armstrong, Stephenson (two) and Brandon Blake. Assists went to Armstrong (two), Brandon Blake and Brittany Kellington. Brussels took home the 6-4 win. The Blyth Bantam hockey club defeated Lions Head three games to one to capture the WOAA championship and advance to the OMHA semi-finals against Bothwell. After splitting the first two games Blyth travelled north for the pivotal third game. The team built a 4-2 lead after two periods of play. Blyth came out flying in the third, scoring four goals in the first three and a half minutes, and went on to post a 10-3 victory. Blyth goals were scored by Dave Ansley, three; Tyler Stewart, two; Bryce T-oll; Kyle Anderson; Adam Anderson; Joel Arthur and Chris Garter. Assists went to Toll, four; Shawn Bromley, three; Ansley; Stewart; Matt Anderson; Carter, Derek Cook and Craig Marks. Game four returned to Blyth on Saturday giving the boys a chance to win the series on home ice. Blyth got off to a shaky start, giving Lions Head a 2-0 lead after the first period. However, they finally scored early in the second, then added two more within a minute. Blyth scored an insurance goal with seven minutes to go in the game, then played a strong defensive game to win 4-2. K. Anderson scored twice for the winners with singles going to Toll and Bromley. Collecting assists were Jamie Black, two and A. Anderson. Dean Wilson provided steady goal tending throughout the series for Blyth. The first playoff game is Friday night in Blyth. The evaluations provide an opportunity for any skilled minor hockey player, from Minor Atom (born 1987) to Midget (born 1981 or 1980), as residents of Huron or Perth counties, to meet our new coaches and participate in our on-ice drills in three sessions of 1 1/2 hours each. Each session is offered at a cost of $10 each and a written evaluation based on skills, general qualities and playing ability will be completed by the third session It gives us an opportunity to assess the talent available for our 1997/98 season, as well as giving the player an idea whether this caliber of hockey is right for them.
