Atoms oust Brussels The Blyth Atom Rep hockey club won their first playoff series by dumping Brussels three games to one. Brussels was strong in the open er, downing Blyth 3-2. Scoring for Brussels were Nic Campbell (two) and Sean Hoegy. Hoegy, Tyler Campbell and Devon Blake earned assists. In game two, the visiting team once again seemed to have the advantage. Blyth jumped to a 2-1 lead through the first, increasing that to 4-2 by the second buzzer. Hoegy, assisted by Tyler Camp bell scored Brussels first period goal. The home team attempted a comeback in the third when Bran don Blake and Hoegy fed the puck to Kyle Stephenson to take the tally to 4-3. However, Brussels could not hold off, allowing another netter at 3:05 of the final frame. After splitting the first two games, the stage was set for the third game in Brussels. With the score tied 2-2 late in the third period, Brussels took the lead on a Tyler Campbell goal with three and a half minutes to play. Hoegy and Scott Glitz assisted. Immediately, Coach Haggitt called a time-out to regroup the Blyth skaters. The move paid off, as on the next shift Trever Koehler tied the game on a great individual effort. The game remained tied to send it to sudden-death overtime. Blyth wasted little time winning the game just 25 seconds into overtime. T.J. Marks made a good play to keep the puck in Brussels' zone, sending it to Cole Stewart. He cen tered a pass to Kirk Stewart who one-timed a shot into the Brussels net for the victory. Blyth got another goal from K. Stewart and Micah Loder. Assists went to C. Stewart, with three, and Mike Bean. Brussels first two goals were scored by Stephenson and Hoegy. The home team scored first at 16:41 of the first though Blyth was able to tie the score nine minutes later. Krystopher Campbell bulged the twine, with the assistance of Heather Schmidt and Devin Jenk ins. Midway through the second peri od, down 3-1, Blyth’s Kendall Whitfield popped one in off the sticks of Jonathon McDowell and Anthony Peters. They drew even with 2:25 remaining in the frame when Schmidt, assisted by Jenkins and Carter Cloakey pul one over the line. Unable to hold off the attackers, Brussels scored in the dying sec onds. Joel Salverda played well in the net for Blyth. The final score was 4-3 for Brus sels. With Salverda between the posts The story that far in the series, was the superb play of Brussels goalie Brooklyn Wheeler. Blyth was dominating the play, but she kept her team in the games with great saves. Blyth countered with solid goal tending of their own, being sup plied by Eric Jarrett and Justin Peters. The series then moved back to Blyth for game four, with Blyth nesting one more victory to clinch the series. This game started out the same as the others. Blyth took a 1-0 lead after the first period in another close-checking game. However, in the second period, Blyth's luck around the net started to change. They scored three times and added five more in the last period to coast to a convincing 9-0 win. Jarrett picked up the shutout for Blyth. Goal scorers were C. Stewart, three; Loder, two; K. Stewart, two; Ryan McClinchey and Andy Toll. Assists went to K. Stewart, three; Tyler Kemighan, two; Marks; C. Stewart; Koehler; Bean; McClinchey and Toll. For the Brussels team, "It was a good series overall," said Coach Merle Hoegy, "but, they just didn't have quite enough steam to put them over the top.' Blyth then travelled to Hensall on Saturday to start a best-of-five series there. Again Blyth found out they were in for a tough game. Between missing numerous chances early and Hensall's close checking, the game remained scoreless until Stewart scored on a pass from Marks with 15 seconds left in the first period. Hensall scored the only goal of the second period, tying the game 1-1 heading into the third. Four minutes into the final frame, Blyth took the lead on a goal by K. Stewart, assisted by Bean and C. Stewart. Blyth goalie Peters took over, shutting the door on the Hensall shooters to preserve a 2-1 victory.
