Trio presents holiday program
Sunday School hosts concert :
The Belgrave United Church
Women met on Thursday evening,
Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. in the church
school room.
President Mrs. Ross Higgins
welcomed everyone and opened the
meeting with a Christmas poem.
Mrs. Les Shaw, Mrs. Clarence
Yuill and Mrs. Mike Cottrill
presented a Christmas program of
Mary telling her story of the events
leading up to the birth of Christ.
Readings were interspersed with
scripture and Christmas Carols.
Mrs. Higgins introduced Mrs.
Brian Wightman who sang two
solos, I Heard The Bells on
Christmas Day and Christmas In
Killarney, accompanied by her
mother Mrs. Wm. Coultes.
Mrs. Higgins conducted the
business. Donations-. were given to
Town and Country Homemakers,
Family and Children's Services,
Palliative Care and The Resource
Centre.
Mrs. Gordon Bosman presented
the budget for 1997.
A capacity crowd filled the
Belgrave Community Centre for
the Kinsmen Annual Turkey Bingo
on Thursday evening, Dec. 5.

The Knox United Church annual
Sunday School Christmas concert
was held on Friday, Dec. 6 at the
Women's Institute Hall.
MC Kim McArter welcomed
everyone to the concert.
The Sunday School sang Jingle
Bells followed by kindergarten and
Grade 1 doing a Christmas
welcome and Merry Christmas.
Recorder trio, Scott Folkard,
Michelle Nixon and Jenni Hopf
performed Jingle Bells and Mary
Had a Little Lamb as their chosen
numbers.
The crowd was delighted with
the Sunday School performance
"The Christmas Beasts".
Clifford Coultes performed
followed by Shawn Cottrill with a
piano solo, Silent Night.
The senior class entertained with
"What's So Special" and
Christopher Cottrill played Joy To
The World on the piano. Faisdodo
and Wind Through the Olive Trees
were enjoyed as the recorder trio
consisting of Scott Folkard,
Michelle Nixon and Jenni Hopf
performed. Camerra Yuill
entertained by singing White
Christmas.
Kim McArter told of the church's
foster child and read a letter the
Sunday School had received from
Mrs. Ross Anderson gave the
report of the nominating commit-

Turkey raffle draws were won by
Allan Dunbar and Sherri Robinson.
The Belgrave Community Club
held its Christmas dinner party on
Dec. 6 with over 80 attending.
After the singing of 0 Canada
and grace by Rev. Cathrine
Campbell, a delicious dinner was
served by the Belgrave restaurant.
Following the meal at noon a
variety program was presented,
consisting of readings by Alice
Nicholson and Ada Taylor. There
were musical numbers by Arnold
Bruce, Mary Coultes and Ron
McBurney, Lorne Campbell and
Ross Anderson.
Dennis Leddy thanked the
caterers for the delicious meal.
A sing-song of Christmas Carols
led by Rev. John Roberts,
accompanied by Freda Johnston at
the piano, was enjoyed by the
gathering. Numerous draws were
made for a variety of prizes.
Another short sing-song concluded
him.
The senior class again performed
"Would It Still Be Christmas?"
with the audience joining in singing
of Christmas Carols, It Came Upon
the Midnight Clear, The First Noel
and Silent Night to conclude the
evening.
Santa arrived just in time to hand
out candy bags to all the children.
Joanne Robinson was thanked for
The Afternoon Unit of the UCW
held its December meeting at the
home of Janisa Coultes with 13
members and two visitors present.
They gathered at 1 p.m. for a
soup and sandwich luncheon. The
delicious homemade soup was
compliments of Mrs. Coultes and
Edith Vincent to open the
Christmas meeting followed by the
first verse of 0 Little Town of
Bethlehem. Audrey Fenton read the
scripture, Luke chapter 2, verses 4 -
8. The carol Gentle Mary Laid Her
Child Lowly in a Manger was sung.
Short definitions of the letters
"G" "I" "F" "T" "S" were read by
Jean Pattison, Rev. Mary Jane
Hobden, Mary Hunter, Marg Walsh
and Audrey Fenton.

Mrs. Higgins announced the
installation of officers will be held
Jan. 12. She closed the meeting
with the benediction and lunch was
served by Mrs. Campbell and Betty
Irwin.
The Evening Unit met in the
church basement for the Christmas
meeting with the members bringing
a guest.
Barbara Anderson welcomed the
members and guests. She opened
the meeting with a meditation and
prayer.
During the business the minutes
were read and adopted. The roll
call was answered by 20 members
and eight guests bringing articles
for the Christmas Bureau.
The worship and program were
combined in a candlelight service
presented by Rev. Mary Jane
Hobden and Wilma Higgins with
several members taking parts. The
meeting closed With prayer. Lunch
was served by Annie Cook and
Mildred Yuill.
The offering was received and
dedicated. Ada Taylor related a true
story of an eight-year-old Mexican
girl from a remote village and her
struggles getting an education. Mrs.
Taylor went back to her village in
1993, with 100 other people,
supplies and equipment, doctors
and technicians to treat and teach
the natives.
Another Christmas Carol was
sung followed by prayer. Rev.
Hobden closed the meeting with a
prayer.
People
Brenda and Wayne Jones of
Huntsville and Ashley Irwin of
Ashfield Twp. spent the weekend at
the home of Betty Irwin.
The first Sunday of Advent was
celebrated in Knox United Church,
Belgrave and Calvin Brick with the
'lighting of the first Advent"candle.
Joanne, Jeremy and Nicole
Robinson lit the candle and told the
story of Advent in Belgrave. Ivan
Dow and Vicki Black took part at
Calvin Brick.
Greeters at the door were Bruce,
Kim and Laura Higgins. Becky
Logan conducted the service. The
senior choir sang Beautiful Words
of Jesus before the members of the
Sunday School told the story of the
first Christmas through the eyes of
the "Friendly Beasts" who all
offered their service at the time of
the birth of Jesus.
Amy Barnes read scripture lesson
taken from Luke 1, verses 46 - 55.
As the senior class took part as
donkeys, cows, cats, dogs, doves,
members of the junior Sunday
School were dressed as Mary and
Joseph, sheep and stars. They all
joined in the singing of The
Friendly Beast led by their Sunday
School teachers and accompanied
by Joanne Robinson on the piano.
The offering and white gifts were
gathered by Sarah Cowan and
Shannon Cook. The monetary
donations support the church's
foster child, while the other white
gifts will be given to the Christmas
Bureau.
Rev. Mary Jane Hobden and
Harmony Spivey led in the prayers
of the people. The singing of To
Show by Touch and Word and Go
Now In Peace closed the service.
Linda Knight representing the
District Health Council asked for
permission to make a presentation
to the congregation about their
work and the proposals concerning
the hospitals in the area. A question
and answer period followed.
