celebrate the joy of Christmas, she
said.
"God's love is always the same,
never changes and that is why the
evergreen tree is used, because it
never changes."
The children continued to put an
ornament on the Advent tree, then
proceeded to place their white gifts
underneath. Children's hymn Away
in a Manger was sung.
Psalm ''0 Lord You Once
Favoured your Land" was followed
by Gloria Patri. The Old Testament
Lesson, Isaiah 40: 1-11, was read
by Joan Clark. Gospel reading,
Mark 1: 1-8, was read by Mrs.
Howson.
The theme of her message was
Conversion. It means returning
from travelling down a wrong road
and setting out anew down the right
one, she said. That is what John the
Baptist told the people to do, to
return from going down the road of
sin, which leads to death, and to set
out anew on the road of virtue,
which leads to life.
Conversion involves admitting
that one's life is going in the wrong
direction, reversing direction and
embarking on a whole new life,
Mrs. Howson said.
As a sign that they intend to
change their lives, John tells the
people to step down into tne river
and be baptized. He reminds them,
however, that washing their bodies,
which symbolizes washing their
souls, is only the first step. John's
baptism is a baptism of repentence,
a preparation for the second step.
The second step is receiving the
baptism rebirth that Jesus will
bring. It's receiving the Holy Spirit
and beginning a whole new life. It's
setting out anew on the right road.
All- need to revitalize the life of
the Spirit within them, Mrs.
Howson said. Advent is a time for
doing this. "The church knows that
all of us need to undergo
conversion to some extent, to
prepare to celebrate Christ's
coming on Christmas. By doing
this, we will also prepare ourselves
for Christ's final coming at the end
of time."
