THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1996 Belgrave Optimist club receives charter The hamlet of Belgrave has a new organization. The recently chartered Belgrave and District Optimist Club is 30 members strong and already mak- ing their voice known as a "Friend to Youth". The club, which was sponsored by the Tavistock Opti- mists, is fundraising for the pur- chase of new playground equipment at the East Wawnaosh Public School. Under new ministry guidelines, the present equipment has been deemed unsafe. "We saw there was a need and are hoping to make a good start with our first fundrais- er." said Publicityperson Tina Klerks. Two thousand tickets have been printed for a draw,•but that won't be the end. "We said at the last meet- ing that we aren't going to stop until the equipment is there and up," said Klerks. "We are going to do everything we can as a new club." In addition to the fundraiser, the club is busy planning a number of activities and self-promotions. They entered a float in the Wing- ham Santa Claus parade last week- end. A Christmas fun day is being planned, which will be held at the school while their Christmas party is Dec. 16. The draw will be made that day as well. The Club is also planning to judge the Christmas lights on Dec. 20 and 21 for which they will be awarding eight prizes. , In January the Optimists are organizing a Neighbourhood Watch and Block Parent program for the area. Club President Angelo Ippolito said, "We hope to become an inte- gral and very positive part of our great community." Congratulations to Carleigh Galbraith, who won a scholarship at Mount Forest at the Festival of the Arts English speech division on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Shawn Galbraith recently won two bronze awards at Kitchener in Tae Kwon Do for sparing and patterning. The annual Kinsmen Turkey Bingo is on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Belgrave Community Centre. Lisa and Erin Weitendorf of Owen Sound visited recently with Jeanine and Jordan VanCamp. Students at East Wawanosh Public School and Wingham Pee Wee hockey teammates wish Justin Campbell a speedy recovery after his recent operation on Nov. 28 at University Hospital in London. Justin had his wrist broken in a hockey game the first week in November. Mabel's Moms met at their regular time on Wednesday, Nov. Euchre was held in the Women's Institute Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Winners were: high lady, Merle McFarlane; second high lady, Aileen Leddy; ,Ione hands, Jean 27. Their topic was discipline. Those who attended were Sherri Sippel, Scott and Daniel; Meagan and Ben Scott; Tyler and Spencer Stevenson; Elaine Scott and Peyton; Heather Jones and Shea Lynn; Linda Hess and Andrew; Mary Jane Hobden and Stephen; Donna Raynard, Trevor and Heidi. Mr. and Mrs. Clare Weber and family attended the Crowston Christmas get-together at the East Wawanosh Public School on Saturday, Nov. 30. Relatives from Chatham, Kitchener, Kincardine, Lucknow, Whitechurch, Belgrave and surrounding area attended and enjoyed a delicious potluck Christmas dinner. Friday, Dec. 6 is Knox Sunday School Christmas Concert at the Women's Institute Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. All families are reminded to give a donation to the Christmas Bureau as in the past.
