Belgrave Optimist club receives charter
The hamlet of Belgrave has a
new organization.
The recently chartered Belgrave
and District Optimist Club is 30
members strong and already mak-
ing their voice known as a "Friend
to Youth". The club, which was
sponsored by the Tavistock Opti-
mists, is fundraising for the pur-
chase of new playground
equipment at the East Wawnaosh
Public School.
Under new ministry guidelines,
the present equipment has been
deemed unsafe. "We saw there was
a need and are hoping to make a
good start with our first fundrais-
er." said Publicityperson Tina
Klerks.
Two thousand tickets have been
printed for a draw,•but that won't be
the end. "We said at the last meet-
ing that we aren't going to stop
until the equipment is there and
up," said Klerks. "We are going to
do everything we can as a new
club."
In addition to the fundraiser, the
club is busy planning a number of
activities and self-promotions.
They entered a float in the Wing-
ham Santa Claus parade last week-
end. A Christmas fun day is being
planned, which will be held at the
school while their Christmas party
is Dec. 16. The draw will be made
that day as well. The Club is also
planning to judge the Christmas
lights on Dec. 20 and 21 for which
they will be awarding eight prizes.
, In January the Optimists are
organizing a Neighbourhood Watch
and Block Parent program for the
area.
Club President Angelo Ippolito
said, "We hope to become an inte-
gral and very positive part of our
great community."
