tremendous creative energy and her
vision for the Festival."
Amos said that she felt now was
the time to leave because the
Festival currently has strength in so
many areas. She cited the
administrative staff under General
Manager Karen Stewart, and the
new energy at the board level.
Roulston said the board has
launched a search for Amos's
replacement. Applications will be
accepted by the search committee
until Dec. 31. As in the Blyth
tradition, it is hoped the artistic
director designate will be in place
by late May so he or she can work
with Amos through the coming
season to experience the unique
problems and joys of mounting a
season of new Canadian work in a
repertory system.

Country Christmas at Doon
The village is decked out in all its
Christmas finery as Doon Heritage
Crossroads prepares to celebrate
the holiday season with Country
Christmas on Sundays, Dec. 15 and
22, from 1 to 4 p.m.
The cedar garlands have been
hung and the ornaments unwrapped
and placed on the Christmas trees,
ready for those days.
At the turn of the century,
Christmas was indeed a special
time; concerts and pageants in the
schools and churches, families
bundling into their horse-drawn
sleighs to visit friends and relatives
and the celebration of family
traditions passed down through the
years.

Janet Amos resigns as AD
50TH WEDDING
ANNIVERSARY
Janet Amos has informed the
Blyth Festival board of directors
that 1997 will be her last season as
artistic director.
Amos returned to the Festival in
late 1993 when it faced financial
collapse under an accumulated
operating deficit of $229,000. Since
then, the deficit has been replaced
by a $19,000 accumulated surplus,
a capital reserve fund of $72,000
has been put in place and the
Festival's mortgage has been
reduced by $85,316.
"I knew it would take three years
to rebuild the Blyth Festival,"
Amos said in her letter to the board.
"To do this I relied heavily on old
friends and associates of the
Festival. Directors, designers,
playwrights and technicians have
all worked hard to rebuild the
creative centre of the theatre."
By the time Amos leaves after
the 1997 season, she will have
guided the Festival through nine of
its 23 seasons. She was also artistic
director from the 1980 through
1984 seasons. Those have been
some of the most successful sea-
sons of the Festival's history, both
artistically and financially, said
Keith Roulston, president of the
board of directors. "We regret to
learn of Janet's decision but we
know that with the tremendous
amount of energy she has given to
rebuild the Festival, she couldn't be
expected to go on forever."
"There was probably no one else
who could have worked the miracle
of bringing the Festival back from
sickness to health. We'll miss her
