For Teens, By Teens 'My parents are the worst in the world" I'm a smoker Is that a problem? By Amanda Rich Is it the cave man look of yellowed teeth? The stale smell on nice new clothes and clean hair? or the attractive spitting? Could it be the lovely colour of nicotine stained fingers? All of these thoughts are negative, yet almost unnoticeable unless you look very closely. I am a smoker. Because of this small fact, I have received a lot of insults and interrogation. Pushing away the sarcasm people will say, 'Oh, Are you ever cool now!' Though the majority of smokers started up because of peer pressure, that is not always the case. I know people who only take a few drags for the initial "buzz" of nicotine. They don't want to smoke a whole cigarette for feaPof addiction and "losing the buzz". I started for a different reason all together. I wasn't trying to run from problems, but simply because I enjoyed it. At first I said I wouldn't get addicted, but of course I did. When I first experimented with cigarettes, it was all by myself; no one else was around. Personally I liked it, the smoke and the initial calm, and I enjoyed the whole feeling. I would only smoke when I was upset or strasecl, but then I began to get cravings when I was at parties with other smokers. The difference with me was that I didn't want anyone else to know I smoked. No one thought I did, so I would hide to have a smoke. Also I believed that if I didn't buy my first pack I wouldn't have gotten addicted. I have gotten over hiding from people and am not ashamed to smoke in public anymore. Why should I be? I did it for myself. I'm aware of the risks, but I choose to smoke. I don't find it fair when non-smokers put smokers down just because we smoke. We all have our own reasons for starting and addictions and bad habits are hard to kick. No smoker I know has put anyone down for not smoking. I have noticed that no matter where smokers go there will always be someone who will think we are too close to them. Smokers and non-smokers should be able to come to a happy medium. I can't believe how a small cigarette can cause so many arguments. This is too small a thing for so much turmoil to be caused because of it. By Mark Nonkes "My mom is ..." or ''My dad is tt Fill in the sentence for yourself. Your mom, dad or both and you may never see eye to eye. Often we catch ourselves complaining about our parents. You may think they may win "The Worst Parent Ever Award". But wait. The other day when I was surfing the web I stumbled upon this article at The Halifax Herald. In Williamsport, Pennsylvania a man, David Crist, with a $55,000 credit card debt thought it was the end of his comfortable lifestyle. The solution: throw your nine-year-old deaf daughter in front of a truck. When the girl, Diane Crist, was initially hit she limped over to father and was quoted as saying "Daddy, help me." But as the story says "he came over, picked me up and threw me back down on the road." On Thursday, last week, he was convicted for this. • But this isn't the only thing he By Erin Roulston Anyone who entered the school with a smile, like I did that morning, quickly lost it. The teary faces on many of the girls illustrated the mood pervading the students. The quiet whispers, the long frowns, the foggy gazes. Even though I didn't know those kids, who died this past weekend, the depression rubbed off on me. It really wears you out; being sad. By the end of the day I was tired. I just wanted to go home and sleep. The simple task of reading a novel in English class was terribly difficult. I just kept wondering how it could happen. Those were regular people doing regular things. I saw them walking down the halls. I saw them laughing, I saw Brandon with his girlfriend, happy as any normal couple, and now he's in a coma. His friends are dead. Three people. Three people just like me. They never saw it coming. One minute they were laughing and joking, listening to the radio, the next minute they .. . weren't. They are never going to do that again. Never going to laugh, never going to joke. In phys. ed. class this morning even the loud, insensitive boys were eerily quiet. The only sound has done. In fact he tried to electrocute a four-year-old daughter for insurance money. Not only does he win one of the worst parents ever award, he probably would win the award for "Do Anything for Money". He also tried to kill his only brother by hiring a hit man. By Ashley Gropp The styles of today are usually revived from the 70s using a 90s twist. Hair isn't normally put up in ponytails. Instead it is put up in butterfly clips. Cartoon characters and yellow happy faces are found on shirts as well as on jewellery, wallets and book bags. To keep you warm outside, a short leather trench coat has a cool vintage look. Nails are trendiest with bright colours and metallics. in the gymnasium was the sott "thud" of the volleyballs. The teacher struggled with the volleyball net as if it was the most important thing in the world. He was concentrating on it so hard, trying so hard not to think of his former students, trying not to remember the star ball player, just drafted by an American College for their baseball team. He'd had such a bright future We take life for granted, don't we? When we fail a test or lose a game, we complain about how crummy our lives are. We say "life sucks" and•wallow in our misery. But when a tragedy like this occurs it all becomes insignificant. We've forgotten just how precious life is, we've forgotten that it can all be just ripped away from us in the blink of an eye. We've forgotten that it can happen to ANYBODY! And at ANY time. We seem to take for granted that we'll live to the ripe old age of 80 and sit sipping tea in our rocking chairs on the porch, but we may not! When death hits so close to home it is scary. We've forgotten that death doesn't only happen in the novies and this is a sudden in- Luckily all of these attempts were just attempts, no one was killed. But the deaths of his fther, who died in 1968, his mother's fiance in 1976 and his mother in 1981 were reopened for investigation. Was he involved? No charges were laid but it makes one wonder. Legs look stylish covered by vintage hip-huggers. The best footwear are "Airwalk" or shiny shoes. The best fabrics are anything shiny and disco-esque polyester. Not only are we struck with the devastation of losing someone so young, we lose our comforting sense of immortality. I would just like to say goodbye to Neil, Pam and Brian; the world will miss you. Good luck to Sarah, Brandon and Mark; I hope you'll recover, and I send my condolences to all people touched by this tragedy. Anyway, next time your parents do something you think unjust and you want to nominate them for "The Worst Parent of the Year", sorry, they probably won't win. Think of David Crist. He'd likely have them beat. 7. bright nail polish colours 6.
