A quick stopover in Blyth was
informative and educational for the
provincial Agriculture Minister
Noble Villeneuve and Huron MPP
Helen Johns.
The pair was on a tour through
Huron County, Nov. 22, visiting
three diverse agricultural opera-
tions which included Howson's
flour mill.
Being a member of parliament
from Eastern Ontario, Villeneuve
had limited knowledge of the uses
for various wheats and appeared
intrigued to discover Howsons runs
only hard Durham wheat through
their plant, for the purpose of creat-
ing pasta flour.
Co-owner Bill Howson explained
the flour-making process to Vil-
leneuve and Johns during a tour of
the facility, as well as describing a
component which is unique to
Canada and one of only 14 in the
world which permits better extrac-
tion of the bran from the wheat.
Improved extraction results in a
higher quality product, said How-
son. "(The new equipment) has also
increased productivity by 30 per
cent. Our strength is providing the
best quality, service and price."
At present, the extracted bran
goes to feed cattle, but it is hoped
to develop a human market for the
dietary fibre. Bran from Durham
wheat has a flavour which does not
meet the requirements of cereal
companies, he said.
Ninety per cent of Howson's pro-
duction is bulk, going to plants in
Toronto and Montreal for process-
ing before export. Only five per
cent is exported before "value
added", said Howson.
Other stops on the one-day tour
for the two MPPs included Bennett
Farms, RR1, Gorrie and Suntastic
Hothouse, RR3, Exeter.
