Hunts skate to silvers
Down and out
With his goalie down, the Goderich Pirates defenseman reaches out to stop the attack of the
Brussels Crusader. Despite efforts like this, the home town team couldn't pull out a win in
this Saturday night contest.
Silver shone brightly for the Hunt
women, Nov. 16-17, when they
speed skated their way to second
place in their respective divisions at
the Marion Hanje Memorial Fall
Classic in Cambridge.
Thrilled with her jump to the
PeeWees class (6-7 year-olds),
Cayli had the opportunity to skate
longer distance over the two day
event instead of the shbrter compe-
tition for the Cradle class.
Freshly recovered from a broken
ankle in the off-season, Carla cap-
tured a silver out of 12 skaters in
the Juvenile Girls (12-13 year-olds)
category.
"Her recovery was a success and
she is quite excited about the
results," said mom, Kathy Hunt.
Taking on 11 opponents in the
Open Women's division, Hunt
earned a silver as well as achieving
the second fastest time in Ontario
for the 1,500 metre. The time quali-
fies her for an upcoming Quebec
meet and earns her one of two
Canadian qualifying times required
for participation in the provincial
finals.
Hunt also skated personal best
times in the 500 metre and 666
metre pursuit.
"I am looking forward to a good
future," said Hunt. "(This meet)
enabled me to develop passing and
pack skating skills."
Brett skated well in the Bantam
category, taking eighth out of 15
competitors.
Tykes edge
Milverton
Blyth Tykes took to the ice at
home last Saturday in a game
against Milverton and edged their
visitors by one point.
The three Blyth goals were
scored in the first period by Krysto-
pher Campbell, Kendall Whitfield
and Heather Schmidt. Devin Jenk-
ins got the assist on the Whitfield
marker.
Crusaders' rally not enough
The Goderich Pirates skated to an
early lead then held off a late
Crusader rally for a 7-6 win in
Brussels Saturday night.
Darryl Durnin opened the scoring
32 seconds into play with Jeff
Klages increasing the lead eight
minutes later. Dean Wheeler
completed the first period scoring
summary with one minute
remaining.
The Brussels Bulls boarded the
bus and headed into Kincardine to
play the first place Bulldogs last
Friday night.
Kincardine scored first in this
one, but at 9:51 of the first the
Bulls tied it up when Tim Zaba
scored, assisted by Jeff Sauve and
Andy Agar. Kincardine went ahead
once again and were able to take a
2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Bulls tied it up at 13:52 of
the second period when Jason
Heipel got his first of the year
scoring on a great second effort
assisted by Dan Williams and Josh
Alexander. At 7:52 of the second
period the Bulls took the lead in the
game on a goal by Brian McNichol,
assisted by Williams and Heipel.
Kincardine this time tied it up late
in the period and the score
remained tied into the third.
Kincardine scored two
unanswered goals to make the final
score 5 - 3.
Dan Balog was superb in net in a
PeeWee
Reps
win 4-3
After two recent losses against
Huron Park and Wingham, Blytt,
PeeWee Reps edged Milverton 4-3
in an away contest, Nov. 22.
Scoring honours went to Derek
Cook, Luke Slotegraaf and Craig
Marks, with two. Assists were
credited to Rob Archambault, Matt
Anderson, two, and Paul Walker.
Second period action saw
Goderich's Tim Harrison score
twice in 11 seconds while Rick
Boon scored the second Crusader
goal.
Harrison scored two more in the
third with Jason Coulter adding a
single for a 7-2 lead. The Crusaders
replied with four goals by Ron
Strome in the game's last seven
minutes, but fell short of tying by a
losing cause, but the Bulls got
some bad breaks.
On Sunday afternoon the Bulls
were visited by the second place
Mt. Forest Patriots. The Bulls
opened the scoring at 10:55 of the
first period when Heipel scored
assisted by Ryan Wright and Darin
Alviano. Mt. Forest tied it up on
the power play and then went ahead
late in the first and took a 2-1 lead
into the first intermission.
Bulls forward Zaba scored,
assisted by Grant Jarvis and
Williams at 14:53 to tie the game at
two, but at 6:47 Mt. Forest was
able to take the lead back. At 2:38 a
heavy check involving Jarvis took
the glass out behind the net so the
players were sent to the dressing
rooms so the glass could be put
back in and the ice could be
flooded.
Eighteen seconds after the game
resumed Alviano scored assisted by
shot.
Brian Campbell added four
assists while Boon had three
helpers along with his goal. Tony
Smith was in net for Brussels while
Tom Connor guarded the Goderich
goal.
The Crusaders have no home
game this week due to the Optimist
Atom Tournament.
twice
Heipel and Wright to tie the game
at three. The teams switched ends
for the third and at 17:06 the
Patriots were able to take the lead
4-3. At 5:33 of the third Sinclair
scored, assisted by Wright and
McNichol to tie the game once
again. With only seconds to go the
Bulls thought they would have a tie
when at 13.2 seconds to go in the
game Mt. Forest was able to jump
on a loose puck on a scramble in
front of the net and make the final
score 5-4 in favour of the Patriots.
This weekend sees the Bulls
travel to Mt. Forest on Friday night
for an 8:30 start for the second
game of a home and home with the
Patriots. There is no home game on
Sunday due to the Optimist Atom
Tournament being played all
weekend, so be sure and get up to
the arena to see some hockey being
played by some possible stars of
the future.
