The Evening Unit of the UCW hosted a delicious potluck dinner in the church basement on Thursday, Nov. 21. Muriel showed a video. Proceeds from the dinner will go towards the expenses of volunteers going to Bluefields, Nicaragua. Bill and Muriel Coultes are part of the second group of volunteers who will work on the steel construction of the roof. The city of Bluefields is on the Atlantic side of Nicaragua, close to the centre of the Mexican church area. The church was founded in 1849 by German missionaries and later taken over by the North American (some from Canada) missionaries. In 1974 the church became independent but in 1979 the political revolution started and lasted 10 years. The people had fled because their homes and businesses were all destroyed. They slowly returned during the years 1985-1990. The United Church had an affiliation with the Moravian Church and in 1990 appealed for assistance. London Conference responded and sent a team down to assess what was required. They decided the most urgent need was a school, so more volunteers went down and worked in partnership with the people to build the walls, ceiling and second floor. It was intended the local people would put on the roof but that never happened.. There were too many other buildings to rebuild. In 1995 an appeal was launched to raise cash or materials. Four groups of 11 will go to Bluefields in January-February to construct the roof. A roof has been designed that will withstand 200 mph winds and be earthquake proof.
