THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1996 Huronlea residents enjoy visit from buddies By Olive Sproul On Tuesday, Oct. 29 Cindy did a 'beauty boutique giving manicures to anyone who wanted one. On Halloween we were treated to a spooky party when Huron Strings entertained with Donald and Daisy Duck wiggling their bottoms. There was a third member of the orchestra also dressed as a 'quacker'. They were all having fun. The staff and a few of the more mobile residents were also in costume. Their participation in the various entertainments adds to the enjoyment. Most people love to sing and harmonize. We all had a ball singing along with the band. This was a very enjoyable party. Now we are back on standard time. It is less stressful to change back that hour, than it was to move forward in the spring. Nevertheless it's disorienting for a week or two whichever way we monkey with the clocks. November, the gray month dawned wet and clammy cold on a Friday. The Americans brighten it up with their Thanksgiving, but we've had ours last month. The only thing approaching a holiday is Remembrance Day, and which, though a holiday of sorts, it has such solemn connotations that it is not a celebration at all, although we may well celebrate the freedom we are blessed with. Still we must regret the terrible price we paid in the two wars. In Canada, every little town and hamlet, every whistle stop or crossroads lost Brussels People Majestic Institute quilt donated for SAFE week winner was Jan Bray, RR 1, Ethel. Thieves steal riding mower Police are looking for anyone with information regarding the theft of a lawnmower. According to OPP an MTD Co- op Turfmaster riding lawnmower with 42-inch cut, 14 horsepower and red in colour was stolen from behind a William St. residence on Nov. 7. The mower is valued at $1,800. The MTD logo was miss- ing from the centre of the steering wheel. Looking for something , Different for Christmas? They mourn them sincerely each fall when even the weather weeps. Hundreds of thousands of monu- ments are visited by parades of their comrades who returned. There are not many old soldiers left from the 1914/18 war and the ranks are thinning among the survivors of the 1939/45 war. We had a more joyous celebration on Nov. 1. We helped Mac and Charlotte Davidson celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary. There was lovely music on that occasion too. That's a long time to be married. Marion Eadie came to play to us. She was pleasantly surprised to find that the piano had been tuned since she had played it last. Two women came in to play in place of Phyllis Mitchell, who usually entertains for an hour or so each month. Phyllis, however had torn the most important finger on her left hand, so that she can not finger the neck of her fiddle. Later that day our "buddies" marched into our hearts, as they always do. Each child had brought a game or a deck of cards. Kelly, Erica and myself played several games of fish and after that we played a board game. Something like Monopoly. As usual it was a very enjoyable afternoon. Thursday morning brings Roman Catholic mass. After we have a review of the week's news and in the afternoon 20 wing watches a movie, while the rest of us do crafts with Kathy. Sunday church services were held with Rev. Beale, conducting the non-denominational service. We watched How the West Was Won with twins Kate and Ashley Olson. It was an enjoyable movie western. At the monthly birthday party the Old Tunes, who had played for the October birthday party entertained. Steve called them up in a tizzy when the Seaforth Old- Timers phoned that they couldn't come because the weather was too stormy. The Old Tunes live in the real snow belt being from Gorrie. We were very grateful that they braved the snow and came to our rescue bringing not only them- selves and the entertainment, but the refreshments too! A draw was held for a lovely, warm, blue flannelette nightgown. It was won by Tammy Martene, Mary Lou Driscoll's daughter. 'Louie' is one of the nursing staff here. Those celebrating birthdays this month are Annie Williamson, who was 87, Velma Naylor both from the nursing home and Wilfred Strickler, from the apartments. For the sweet tooth Katie Clark, left, and Chrissy Mason had a great time preparing sundaes, made-to-order, during the Ark's SAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment) week activities. As well as ice cream, youths were invited to test non- alcoholic mixed drinks, learn about the pitfalls of drug use and dance the evening away, over the three-day event.
