Brussels area welcomes a 'Healthy Touch'
Nice touch
Marsha and Bobby-Jo Lovell have opened their new
business "Healthy Touch Holistic Services" on Turnberry
St., Brussels next door to the office of The North Huron
Citizen.
Take it already
Little Rachel Cousins was more intent on eating her
delicious luncheon provided by the Brussels UCW than
having her picture taken. She joined several other
residents at Brussels United Church, Nov. 13, for the
meal and bake sale.

These days a little pampering is
the least we can do for ourselves.
And if that pampering can in some
way benefit our physical and men-
tal well-being that's even better.
Two sisters recently opened
Healthy Touch Holistic Services in
Brussels, offering an alternative to
chemical treatment of illness. Mar-
sha and Bobby-Jo Lovell, presently
offer reflexology and aromatherapy
to clients out of their Turnberry St.
office, located next to The Citizen.
The former, done on the feet, stim-
ulates reflexes to help the body reg-
ulate itself and as Marsha says, "do
its job better. Everything should be
working together."
Aromatherapy is done through
full body massage using oils
extracted from natural products.
direction of health care that got the
Lovells interested in holistic heal-
ing. Marsha, who has lived in Brus-
sels for three years, was studying
sociology at the University of
Waterloo, while Bobby-Jo, a resi-
dent of Kitchener, was enrolled in
social work there. "With all the
cuts coming from the province, we
panicked," says Marsha. "We
began to look at other options for
us and came up with this." Each is
now certified in reflexology and
aromatherapy.
Their obvious interest in people's
well-being as noted by their cours-
es of study, led to concern for the
direction health care was going.
"With holistic health based on the
premise that relieving stress will
pretty much take care of anything
we could see more people moving
towards natural healing and felt
there would be a need for this type
of business," says Marsha.
Even the unconvinced would
have to acknowledge the treatment
is a soothing interlude in a hassled
life. Lying in a lightly lit room, lis-
tening to soft music while someone
gently massages away the cares and
worries is better than relaxing.
Physically, experts say that the
benefits will not be achieved fully,
until the individual has undergone
three months of treatment for every
year of the illness. "I don't know if
that's true, but you can't expect to
have something for 10 years and
see immediate relief," says Bobby-
Jo.
Not so, the stress factor. "You
will feel better right after a treat-
ment, more relaxed," says Marsha,
adding with a laugh, "I'm the
biggest stress case in the world and
it's helped me. As a healing agent it
may not have immediate benefits,
but you will notice a difference in
the way you feel right away."
The Lovells do not pretend to be
doctors and will not attempt to
diagnose problems, Marsha says.
While the pressure points on the
feet may provide hints as to an area
of health concern, the tenderness
could as simply be attributed to ten-
sion. "No one ever told me I could
tell a person what their health prob-
lems were by massaging their feet."
To interest people in the service
and build up their clientele, the
Lovells are offering a special
Christmas promotion. For $30 peo-
ple can buy two reflexology ses-
sions rather than one, or two
aromatherapy treatments for $35.
Their hours are flexible, though
they are definitely at the office
from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. weekdays.
Appointments can be made by call-
ing 887-9320.
For the future, the Lovells hope
to add health food services to their
business and are pursuing courses
in other holistic healing methods,
such as acupressure and therapeutic
touch.
The massage is not like deep-mus-
cle therapy, but actually is a gentle
massage that helps relieve lymphat-
ic congestion.
The essential oils used in the
practice can help everything from
stress to diabetes, Bobby-Jo says.
While the holistic health idea is
still novel enough to have its skep-
tics, the pair has seen the benefits,
and are still new enough to the
work to be amazed by each experi-
ence. "It really works. I know a few
years ago if anyone would have
said these things to me, I would
have doubted it, but it really does
work," says Bobby-Jo.
"I suppose is does seem a little
kooky to suggest that oils and rub-
bing someone's feet can help cure
most ills, but we're not into that
train of thought," says Marsha. "If
you get sick you get help. This is a
way of dealing with and healing ill-
ness without medication."
It was out of concern with the
