On Sunday, Oct. 20 the Brussels
United Church's 120th anniversary
was celebrated at the morning and
evening services. Taking charge of
the earlier service was Rev. Chris
Johnson, minister of the Brussels
Church. Before the service Grace
Jutzi played several beautiful piano
solos.
Rev. Rick Hawley was the guest
speaker. His sermon was "Ordinary
It was anniversary Sunday at

Lorenzo Ramirez of Empress
United Church, London, was guest
minister.
Greeters were Jim and Thelma
Wilson. Ushers were Bill and
Marion Young and Warren and
Donna Moore. In charge of the
nursery was Jane Meier. Director of

with Call to Worship, Welcome
and Announcements. He expressed
his delight in being back to help
celebrate the anniversary, remem-
bering an unforgettable and
wonderful years in Blyth, from
1987.
During the children's time, Rev.
Ramirez explained what
"anniversary" meant. He brought
and showed them his traditional
cake, with the words, 'Happy
Celebration' then passed them some
goodies.

The congregation of Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship heard a
message by Reynold Kipfer from
Kitchener on Sunday, Oct. 27. His
scripture readings came from
Matthew 4 and 5, and the message
was entitled "Rise and Shine". He
focused on "salt", "light", and
praise.
If Christians are true believers we
are "salt" in the world. Salt is pure,
it preserves, and it adds flavour.
Everyday living needs to have
these characteristics as well. True
believers are also "light" for Christ.
Rene Richmond, Brussels UCW
president, welcomed the ladies to
the October meeting. She read a
poem, "Feeling Depressed About
the Winter Coming".
The minutes were read and
adopted. The treasurer's report was
accepted.
It was decided to bring articles of
food for the Community Food
Bank as a Thanksgiving gift. At
this time of cutbacks, there is a
need.
It was decided to hold the regular
hot luncheon and bake sale on Nov.
13 at 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Admis-
sion is to be $6.
Kathy Workman was in charge of
the worship entitled
People make Extraordinary
Churches."
Warren Wray favoured the
congregation with a solo I The
Lord of Sea and Sky from the new
hymn book "Voices United". Alice
Brothers accompanied him at the
piano.
The choir sang two anthems
Whispering Hope and In The
Cross.
Heaven is in My Heart, under the
direction of Gayle Poore, with
Michael Duthie accompanying at
the piano. The children's hymn All
Things Bright and Beautiful was
sung.
Susan Howson read the scripture
from I Corinthians 1: 4-9.
Rev. Lorenzo Ramirez delivered
his sermon entitled, "Celebrating
God's Blessing". He said he would
like to encourage the congregation
to celebrate God's blessing of life.
Blyth is a blessed, self-contained
community with beautiful scenery,
rolling hills, rivers and big farms,
he said. "It's only when you leave,
you realize how good Blyth is.
Here there is an abundance of life."
"But don't think for a moment.
that I'm too naive for the
abundance of life doesn't only
mean good and pleasant
experiences," Rev. Ramirez added.
Good, hard work is not only
inherited, but is also acquired. The
strongest trees on the mountains are
those that stand the test of time.
Life is not without its storms and is
Mr. Kipfer referred to a blind man
carrying a lantern. He didn't carry it
so that them could see. He carried it
so that others could see him. People
must shine or be the light in the
world so that others will see Jesus
in em, he said. Praise is a necessary
part of a Christian life. If they are
to fulfill God's intended purpose for
them on earth, others too will be
drawn to Christ.
Rod Steinman was the worship
leader for the service. Thelma
Steinman was song leader and
Kathy Procter was pianist. Joy-
Ellen Greenwood played a piano
"Thanksgiving". The hymn For the
Fruit of All Creation was sung.
The first Bible reading was from
Deuteronomy chapter 6, verses 1-
18. Don't forget all of God's laws.
Remember the power of God.
The second Bible reading was
from Luke 17, verses 11-19, the
story of the lepers. Only one came
back to give thanks and he was a
foreigner.
Prayer was followed by the hymn
Spirit of the Living God.
Kathy then showed a film about
the farmers, who started a Food
Grain Bank in this area. The work
of feeding the world's needy begins
at home.
Refreshments followed in the
church basement served by the
session.
A musical service was held at
7 p.m. ''The Old Tune Band"
comprised of Phyllis Mitchell on
the violin, John Lowe on the auto
harp, Alice Brothers at the piano,
Dorothy Steffler on the chord organ
and Harold Steffler on the bass
guitar, entertained.
not without the Saviour, Jesus
Christ.
"I encourage you to celebrate
God's blessing of salvation. There
is no way we earn that salvation,
but it is free and it's ours for the
taking. Our Lord has already paid
the price."
In conclusion, Rev. Ramirez
talked about "celebrating faith or
celebrating God's gift." "It is by
faith that we are gathered here
today, celebrating 136 years. We
will go forward with Christ's
mission and serve Him through the
church. If we feel uncertain about
the future let us remember Christ's
word, "Do not worry about
tomorrow for tomorrow will worry
about itself."
"May we live each day to the
fullest, celebrating God's blessing,
always!"
Following the sermon, the choral
anthem, Sing a New Song to the
Lord was sung, accompanied by
Mr. Duthie at the piano.
A luncheon and social time
followed the service.
solo for the offertory.
On Friday evening, the monthly
program at Huronlea was held.
Intergenerational games and
fellowship were held at the church
afterwards.
Rev. Johnson welcomed the
congregation. Warren Wray sang
two solos. A quartet of Audrey and
Rod Helewig, Neustadt, Emily and
George Cousins sang several
gospel selections. Mr. and Mrs.
Bender, Wroxeter, sang duets
which were very much enjoyed.
The choirs from Ethel and
Brussels United Churches sang
many lively, toe-tapping, hand-
clapping anthems. It was a very
enjoyable evening which was much
appreciated by the congregation.
Alice Brothers, Betty Campbell,
Karen Cardiff, Alf Sutton, Bob
Bremner as well as many other
entertainers and members of the
congregation brought their love of
music to the service.
The church was decorated with
beautiful flowers as well as
vegetables for the fall theme. The
decorators did an excellent job.
The Benediction, given by Rev.
Johnson, and a time of fellowship
brought a wonderful anniversary
service to a close.
