Brussels hosts WI convention
Lydia Adams, conductor of the
Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto
will lead a choral workshop in
Blyth on Saturday, Oct. 26.
This special workshop is being
hosted by the Blyth Festival
Singers, and the featured work will
be Handel's Messiah. Anyone with
an interest in choral music is
invited to take part in this once-in-
a-lifetime choral extravaganza.
Adams is celebrating her 12th
season as conductor of the
Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto.
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
is holding its annual three-day sale
of traditional and contemporary
international handicrafts to benefit
artisans from 10,000 villages in
Third World countries. This sale
offers the people of Huron and
Bruce Counties hundreds of
handicrafts - baskets, ornaments,
toys, jewellery and brassware, to
name a few - from Third World
countries including the Philippines,
Pakistan, Cameroon, Bangladesh,
Indonesia plus South American and
far East countries.
The handicrafts are marketed by
Lodge meets
Morning Star Rebekah Lodge
met on Tuesday, Oct. 8 with a good
attendance. Eight sisters were
present from Pride of Huron Lodge,
Exeter.
The secretary's and treasurer's
reports were read and approved.
Letters were read from Edna
Pearson, district secretary-treasurer
stating that Vice-President
Margaret Tremblay will visit the
lodge on Dec. 10. A banquet will
be held in her honour in Brussels
United Church. Exeter and Clinton
members will also be guests. There
will be a card party held in the
Lodge Hall on Monday, Oct. 21.
District-Deputy President Rene
Richmond and staff will install the
officers of Exeter Lodge on Oct.
16. Members hope that Sis. Jean
Bridge will soon be home again
from the hospital.
A tableau was presented by Sis.
Adah and members of Exeter. She
presented the gavel to N.G. Betty
who, in turn, will take it to another
lodge.

In demand as an adjudicator,
workshop clinician and
accompanist, her recent activities
include work with the New
Brunswick Festival, Encounters
Opera and the CME Institute for
Choral Teacher Education. From
1981 to 1995 she served as pianist
with the Elmer Iseler Singers.
Adams was born in Glace Bay,
Nova Scotia, and received her
musical education at Mount Allison
University in New Brunswick, and
the National Opera Studio and the
SELF HELP Crafts of the World, a
nonprofit alternative trading
organization and a program of
Mennonite Central Committee
(MCC). SELF HELP Crafts
provides vital, fair income to Third
World people - artisans who would
otherwise be underemployed or
unemployed - by selling their
handicrafts and telling their stories
in North America.
All proceeds from the Brussels
sale will benefit SELF HELP
Crafts' artisan partners. In 1995,
SELF HELP Crafts' sales provided
the equivalent of more than 11,500
full-time jobs for Third World
artisans. MCC is the service, relief
and development agency of the
Mennonite and Brethren in Christ
churches in North America.
The sale will be held on Thurs-
day, Oct. 17 from 5 - 9 p.m.,
Friday, Oct. 18 from 3 - 9 p.m. and
Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. -
2 p.m. at Brussels Mennonite
Fellowship, Turnberry St. N.
(Huron County Road 12), Brussels.
A bake sale will also be held to
raise money for Mennonite Youth
Fellowship.
Royal College of Music, both in
London, Eng. She was conductor of
the Ontario Youth Choir in 1992,
and participated as conductor in the
Ontario Choral Federation's 25th
Anniversary celebrations.
The choral workshops will take
place at the Blyth Centre for the
Arts, June Hill Room on Saturday,
Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The doors will open at 9:30 a.m.
and coffee will be available.
Participants are asked to bring a
bag lunch and beverages will be
provided.
The registration fee is $10.

A good time was had by one and
all who attended the 57th Guelph
Area Women's Institute Convention
on Oct. 9, 10 at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community
Centre.
Margaret Mclnroy (of Walton),
accompanied by Alice Brothers (of
Brussels) at the piano, provided the
entertainment following a bountiful
supper.
The fashion show "Thanks for
the Memories" 1897-1997 did just
that, bringing back memories of
what was in fashion during that
period. There were many beautiful
wedding dresses and evening wear
modelled, as well as a set of
military uniforms from 1939-1945.
Provincial President Marg Harris
said that a 30-second blip
promoting WI will soon be airing
on radio stations. This is a part of
marketing the WI as it is necessary
to promote the organization and its
good work for home and country.
Guelph Area obtained 49 new
members this past year. Volunteers
are the key to the well being of this
group.
The new FWIO tartan may be
available in 1997.
Maisie Lasby is the WI
representative on the newly-formed
committee to save the Ontario
Agriculture Museum.
Fran Fotheringharri is the new
Guelph Area President. Next year's
convention will be hosted by
Subdivision 10 on Oct. 8, 9 using
banners as the theme.
