THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1996 Brussels students among Madill's award winners Area F.E. Madill Secondary School students took home several awards at the graduation cere- monies, Oct. 11. The Grade 9 proficiency award went to Rachel McQuail of West Wawanosh Twp.; Christa Pegg of Bluevale, earned the Grade 10 pro- ficiency award and Lone Black of Brussels, took the Grade 12 Art award. An OAC proficiency award went to Rowan Kerr of RR5, Brus- sels, for art. Kerr also obtained a Successful Stangs Award for students who contributed positively to the atmo- sphere at Madill, had good academ- ic standing and are pursuing their education. Ryan Hallahan of the Blyth area, captured the John Stewart Mac- Naughton Memorial Award. It is for the student who specializes in the technology area, particularly woodworking and is continue his education. The Stephanie Lea Henry Memo- rial Award went to Andrew Exel of Brussels. It goes to the Brussels Public School graduate who has contributed positively to the social, academic and extra-curricular activities at F.E. Madill. Aaron Barnes of RR5, Brussels, earned the Louise Patton Memorial Award for the Bluevale and area resident who shows excellent over- all achievement. Shaun Walker of Belgrave, cap- tured the Doug Bieman Award for a deserving student entering their first year of studies at the Universi- ty of Guelph, in a program other than the two-year diploma program for agriculture, The ABCD Award went to Heather Somers of Brussels. The "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty" Award goes to the student who has made the greatest contri- bution to the school during her years there. Denise Ten Pas of Brussels and Joel Pegg of Bluevale, earned the MacTavish Award for Merit, which is awarded to a deserving student furthering their education at a post- secondary institution. Among the students receiving their senior letters were: Aaron Barnes, Rowan Kerr and Joel Pegg. HEATHER SOMERS Heather, daughter of Ross an udy Somers, is attendin onestoga College. She is studyin, Advertising and Graphic Design. Menzies recipients In the 25 years since its inception, the George Menzies Endowment Fund Awards have assisted 160 Brussels area students to further their educational goals. The awards are an annual memorial to George Menzies. At the F.E. Madill Secondary School Commencement exercises in Wingham on Friday evening they were presented by Amelia Glitz, his great-granddaughter.
