Seeking a local
family doctor?
Let us know.
Clinton Public Hospital is working hard to recruit
additional family doctors to our service area. With the
departure of Dr. Lal, and Dr. Newland's recent
retirement, we -believe there is a strong demand for
additional physicians. That's what we have been telling
physician candidates that have shown interest in
relocating here.
To be more certain of the demand, we'd like to hear
from everyone who feels they would join the practise
of a new Family Doctor in our area. This will help us
prove to prospective physicians that they will be able
to quickly establish a successful practise.
Here's what to do:
Call Clinton Public Hospital at 482-3447

Ever since the introduction of videocassettes in the 1970s, about the
only films available starring that sexy cartoon character Betty Boop, were
the few that had fallen into the public domain. Now Betty finally gets the
kind of treatment she deserves with The Complete Belly Boop Collection
(Republic) a wonderful eight-tape set featuring 115 cartoons with a total
running time of over 13 hours.
Originally brought to life by animator Grim Natwick at the Fleischer
Studios in 1930, Betty as modeled after actress Helen Kane, the 'Boop-
Boop-A-Doop' girl, but her voice, for the most part, was that of actress
Mae Questal, who also did the voice of Olive Oyl in the Popeye series.
Betty Boop is also remembered for her numerous saucy escapades,
which were censored when the cartoons played on television in the early
1960s, where I first encountered these films.
Over the years I have managed to see many of the best "Boop" cartoons
especially those marvelous gems that mixed live action with animation.
These surreal efforts featured many of the popular big bands of the era
especially Cab Calloway (Minnie The Moocher, Snow White, Old Man of
the Mountain) and Louis Armstrong (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead Your
Rascal You) among others.
By 1934 Betty had become so popular, a regular newspaper comic strip
appeared, as did all sorts of merchandise including tea sets, playing cards,
soap, watches, dolls, candy bars and even cigarette cases. When
Paramount Studios, which distributed the Fleischer's cartoons, asked them
to tone down Betty's sexy character they did so. Unfortunately, this took
away much of what made her so special. The cartoons on these tapes are
transferred from the original uncut 35mm negatives and look marvelous.
Volumes one and eight also feature special tribute to animation pioneer
Max Fleischer from his son director Richard Fleischer. The boxed set sells
for $79.95 or you can buy the volumes individually for under $10 each.
Great classic animation and a lot of fun to boot.
Among the other new releases on store shelves is the summer
blockbuster Twister (Warner - $22.95 or less) a special effects tour de
force from director Jan De Bont (Speed). Also available in a widescreen
version. (Rated 14A)
Four young girls seek vengeance on their classmates in The Craft
(Columbiaffristar) a suspense thriller starring Fairuza Balk, Rachel True
and Robin Tunney. (Rated R)
Lill Taylor stars in the critically acclaimed I Shot Andy Warhol
(Malofilm) as the radical feminist, who gunned down artist Andy Warhol
in the 1960s almost killing him. (Rated R)
If you're looking for more family entertainment then you'll probably
enjoy Flipper (MCA/Universal - $22.95 or less) the latest big screen
incarnation of the popular 60's TV series. The stars are Paul Hogan and
Elijah Wood. (Rated G)
In Race The Sun (Columbia/Tristar) a group of students is inspired by
their new teacher to embark on the challenging science project of building
a building a solar powered car and racing it across Australia. Headlining
the cast are Halle Berry and James Belushi. (Rated G) I video fF.A.X. IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY...1

Each class in the school has
recently received one or two new
computers, featuring the intemet, as
well as access to the library's
cataloguing system. The teachers
are encouraging the use of the new
computers more and more, as they
are the key to technology.
This year, Mr. Kemp and all of
the intermediate teachers are
stressing intermediate (Grade 7/8)
leadership. By this, they mean
planning activities, forming
committees and working with
fellow students.
A good example of ,student
leadership already is being
modelled by Katie Clark, Nicole
Bernard, and Trish Teeft, who had
formed a committee and planned a
dance on last Friday. By selling
beverages and food, we earned
some extra money for a class trip.
We had a few minutes to talk to
Jessica Spink and Kelly White
about the workshops that Mr.
Garland has been doing with Grade
4/5, with the topic being peace-
making. They said that they were
learning how to handle problems
between primary stuflents. They did
several skits, where they had to try
to tell the actors how to solve the
problem that they were arguing
about. They both enjoyed learning
about how to make peace between
people. The class will be "on
patrol" at the primary playground
next week.
Brussels Public School will be
participating in a read-a-thon this
year, to try to raise money to buy
new primary materials, and a more
updated computer encyclopedia.
Kids from Grades 1-8 will be
involved.
And we have yet another warning
about, pediculosis or head lice. We
still have many cases floating
around in the school. Please make
sure your children keep their
brushes, hats, and heads to
themselves. The medication for the
lice is available in the office at the
school.

The Early Years classes at Brussels Public School lined up for their Royal Canadian Legion
sponsored Child Identification videotaping last Friday. Each child says their name, age,
grade and teacher's name, while being taped.
