Nearly 85 percent of cooking related fires start on stoves, and the majority of those occur when cooking oil is overheated in pans or deep-fat fryers. Other kitchen fires can be attributed to being distracted by other activities elsewhere in the home, being under the influence of medication or alcohol or simply not realizing how much of a hazard actually exists. Heating fixtures and appliances make up the second leading cause of home fires. Fireplaces, central heating furnaces, space heaters, water heaters and associated chimneys can be potential fire hazards if they are not designed, installed or used with proper care. In fireplaces, most dangerous fires can be traced to three sources: inadequate cleaning of the chimney leading to the ignition of accumulated tar; hot embers igniting adjacent carpet or rugs; or design, construction or installation deficiencies causing ignition of wall/roof structure. Fires in central heating furnaces and water heaters start mainly form mechanical/electrical failure, or the ignition of vapours from flammable liquids. Space heater fires are primarily due to placing or installing the appliance too close to combustible materials. Careless smoking is the third leading cause of home fires and the leading cause of home fire deaths. A smoker falling asleep in an upholstered chair or bed is the most common scenario. Most often the smokers faculties have been impaired by the influence of medication, alcohol or drugs. Other scenario's include disposing of cigarette ashes and butts in trash cans containing combustible materials, or carelessly dropping lit smoking materials between the cushions of upholstered furniture. Children playing with fire is the fourth leading cause of home fires. It is the second most common cause of home fire deaths and the third leading cause of home fire injuries. Children have a natural fascination and curiosity about fire which may lead to risky behaviour. Statistics show that 70 percent of destructive home fires started by children involve matches or lighters. These fires start in bedding, mattresses, upholstered furniture, paper, trash, clothing, drapes and other common household combustibles. Other common heat sources children play with are stoves, cooking appliances, candles, electric light bulbs, furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces and smokers' materials. The fifth largest cause of home fires is arson or set fires, which are often not considered a fire problem in the home. However, when revenge fires, fires set for fraud or to cover other crimes and fires set by juveniles are considered, arson is a large problem. Electrical fires rank sixth in the list of major home fires. The majority of these involve light bulbs, permanent electric wiring, switches/outlets, and temporary electric wiring. Clothes dryer fires rank seventh on the list of major fires in homes. The primary culprit in these fires is the lack of regular cleaning of lint traps, Other causes of clothes dryer fires -involve electrical short circuits and the failure of automatic controls, which leads to the ignition of electrical insulation, lint, or clothing. Residential Automobile Fire Statistics THE FIRE DEATH RATE IN CANADA IN 1993 WAS 14.8 DEATHS PER MILLION PEOPLE. Smokers materials, cooking equipment fires and children playing with lighters and matches are some sources of ignition that lead the list of numbers of reported fires and reported dollar loss: Residential fires account for the largest percentage of fires in Canada and remains an area of utmost concern accounting for 78% of the total number of deaths and 41% of total losses. Canadian fire departments responded to 65,877 reported fire incidents, causing 417 civilian deaths, 3463 injuries and 1.18 billion dollars Canadian in direct property damage. During the last reporting period, 5 firefighters died while on duty and 888 were injured. Did you know? In Canada there is 1 fire every 8 minutes Fire injures 10 persons each day. That's 1 injury every 2.2 hours Since the last reporting period deaths by fire have increased by 4% John D.
