Oil is an important part of a car's cooling system,
dispersing about 20 per cent of engine heat. Whatever
the choice of oil, it is important to keep it topped up to
ensure the proper running of a vehicle.

The scoop on synthetic oils
changes. Some synthetics contain
an additive that actually bonds to
engine surfaces, providing an extra
layer of protection. And that layer
is there before you start your
engine, so you have no metal to
metal contact even at start-up.
Synthetic oils can be mixed with
conventional mineral oils — they are
fully compatible, and they are
recyclable. There are also semi-
synthetic oils on the market. These
blends of synthetic and mineral oil
offer the best of both worlds — the
low cost of a mineral oil and the
high performance of a synthetic.
Synthetic oils can be more
expensive because they are
engineered to provide superior
performance and protection,
compared to mineral oils. Whatever
your choice, the important thing to
remember is. to keep your oil
topped up to ensure the proper
running of your vehicle.
Synthetic. It sounds like
something artificial — it can't be as
good as the real thing, can it? Well,
when you're talking about synthetic
engine oils, it might be even better.
Oil prevents metal to metal contact
and cleans out dirt and combustion
by-products. Many people don't
realize that oil is also an important
part of the cooling system,
dispersing about 20 per cent of
engine heat.
Most engine wear occurs in the
first few minutes of operation,

Canadians, you're more concerned
about heating than cooling at this
time of year. The only heat you get
is from the engine, which is why
your heater blows cold when you
first start off (before the engine
warms up). If your coolant is low,
your heater is the first thing to
suffer, so keep your antifreeze
topped up.
You may also hear a squealing
noise (audible over your own teeth
chattering) from the heater fan.
That could indicate a worn bearing
in the fan motor, which will
probably seize up on you when you
need it most.
If there's a lot of moisture on
your windshield, and the defroster
can't remove it, you could have a
faulty heater core. That's a mini-
'-adiator that transfers engine heat
distributed through the engine. In
cold weather, oil flows more slowly
and it takes even longer for the oil
to get around.
Synthetic oils are not refined
from crude oil, they are specifically
engineered for high performance
engines. They give you superior
low temperature fluidity, better
high temperature stability, and
greater resistance to oxidation and
shear stress.
Synthetic oils are also less
volatile, and so you are less likely
to have to add oil between oil
into your passenger compartment.
Don't delay, get it fixed — you need
to be able to see where you're
going, and defrosters have enough
trouble keeping windows clear in
very cold weather.
If you travel or commute, it's
worth taking a little extra time to
make sure you have an emergency
kit in the trunk. Winter additions to
the usual emergency kit include the
following:
• good scraper & snow brush
• matches and candles
• can opener
• traction mats
• red cloth (help signal)
• blanket, hats & mittens
• canned fruit/nuts/survival rations
• tin cup
• small shovel
• jumper cables
