The Brussels Tigers edged the
Lieury Jets 3-2 Friday night to win
the 1996 Huron County Fastball
League championship.
The title is the second in a row
for the Tigers, who went unde-
feated (23-0-1) against league
opponents this season.
Brussels opened the second
inning with four consecutive hits
for a 3-0 lead. Lieury replied with
two in the fifth, and had the tying
run at third base in their last at bat
before a strikeout ended the game.
Murray Pipe batted two for three,
scoring the championship winning
run, while Todd Uhrig pitched a
four hit, 14 strikeout game for the
win.
The Tigers had opened the series
with a 14-2 home field victory.
Trailing 2-0 the Brussels Bats came
alive in the third scoring seven
runs. They added four more in the
fourth and three in the sixth before
the game was called.
Doug Conley batted three for
four with a homerun and four RBIs
while Ron Strome, Uhrig, and Tim
Fritz each were two for three.
Uhrig took the win striking out 13
while allowing five hits.
The Tigers currently trail
Harriston 2-1 in their best of five
WOAA Grand Championship final.
Game four was last night in
Harriston with game five scheduled
for Friday night at 8 p.m. in
Brussels.

Brussels Squirts
win 'Fri-County
It was the perfect way to end the
baseball season when the Brussels
Squirt Girls came out on top in the
Tri-county Championships, Sept.
12.
The squad traveled to Belmore,
Sept. 4 for the first game of the
series. The home team was over-
powered as the Brussels Girls took
home a 12-4 win.
Brussels got on the board first,
scoring two in the second, though
Belmore tied the game in the bot-
tom of the inning.
The girls started to stretch the
lead in the next at bat when they
notched four and held Belmore to
one.
With three in the fourth, Brussels
took a 9-4 lead into the final frame.
Scoring three more and holding
their opponent off the board, they
took the victory.
Lesley Pepper had 15 strikeouts
while three batters left their mark.
Brooke Wheeler went three for four
Golfers win

Madill team
Congratulations to Jeremy
Campbell and Tom Pfeiffer for
making the F.E. Madill Secondary
School golf team. They will
compete in the Huron County
Championship in Goderich at the
Sunset Golf Club along with Danny
Cline and Adam La Chance. The
WOSSA Championship will be
played on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the
Listowel Golf Club.
The Madill team was selected on
Thursday, Sept. 12 after a nine-role
tournament at the Wingham Golf
Course. Along with the members
making up the team Chris Cameron
is the alternative with the coach of
the team being Doug Neil.

Nicole Mastnak was perfect at two
for two, hitting a triple, a single and
taking two walks. Brittany Kelling-
ton chipped in two doubles.
The second game of the contest
was much closer, forcing good
defense and excellent pitching to
hold the line on Belmore.
Pepper was strong with 18 strike-
outs.
Wheeler contributed a triple and
a walk while Courtney Sallows
knocked a double.
The three runs scored in the
fourth were all Brussels needed as
Belmore only managed two.
The victory gave the team the
Tri-County championship.
In WOAA play, at the end of
August, the Squirts took on Chep-
stow in three matches, being
defeated in each contest.
Chepstow took the first game 4-0
in Brussels, the second match, in
Chepstow went nine innings for the
3-2 win and once again defeated
Brussels at home, 7-3, in the third
confrontation.
It was an excellent ball series,
with great pitching and fielding by
both teams.
The girls showed dedication to
the game, making their parents and
coaches proud.

THE WINGHAM AND DISTRICT
COMMUNITY LIVING
ASSOCIATION
(WDCLA) held the first Early Bird Draw September 20, 1996 for the
Annual Lottery Dinner and Dance to be held November 16 in
Brussels. Winners of the $500 prize were Jessie and Harold Kerr of
Wingham.
The draw was made by Theresa Van Lammeren at the
Administrative Office located at the Jack Reavie Centre, 153 John
Street, Wingham. The next Early Bird Draw, will take place at 12:00
noon on October 18. The remaining twenty prizes (ten draws for
$100 and ten draws for $1,000) will take place at the Lottery Dinner
and Dance on Saturday, November 16. The event will be held at the
Brussels, Morris-Grey Community Centre in Brussels. A limited
number of tickets are still available through the WDCLA office, 153
John St., Wingham, 357-3562.
Based on the choices and desires of the people we support, WDCLA
staff provide the necessary resources, training and supports to
enable people to become involved in their community. In this, the
eighteenth year of the Lottery Dinner and Dance, the money raised
from the event is even more important in helping us to achieve our
goal.
