Bulldogs, Red Sox scoreless
Sunday, July 21 the Brussels
Bulldogs visited the Lieury Red
Sox in the Huron County Fastball
League. The Red Sox managed
four hits over seven innings but
Dave Smith pitched 15 strikeouts to
keep them the score sheet.
Unfortunately the Bulldogs only
managed two hits and with eight
strikeouts were also kept off the
score sheet, resulting in a scoreless
tie.
Friday night saw some heated
action in the home town rivalry as
the Bulldogs took on the Tigers.
The Tigers took an early lead as
Doug Shaw and Ken Higgins
singled on then Todd Uhrig hit
them home with a single of his
own.
In the third the Tigers added to
their lead as Murray Pipe drew a
lead-off walk. Then Shaw and
It was a tight game, July 22,
when the Brussels Mite Girls wel-
comed the Belgrave squad to their
field.
Nicole Meier and Emily Elston
each gained hits in the opening
frame, but were out on a good
defensive play by Brussels.
Belgrave pitcher Michelle Cook
took the mound in the first, earning
two strikeouts though four runs
scored.
Brussels quieted the Belgrave
bats, allowing only one run due to a
bases-load walk.
The battery of Kristen Palmer
pitching and Coral Nicholson
catching were in fine form as three
batters struck out. Brussels
advanced their lead to 7-1 by the
end of the second.
Belgrave took over in the third,
pushing seven across the plate, to
go one run up on the hometowners.
Cook, who hit a solid double,
was pushed to third on a smash by
Bridget Kellington. She then stole
home on an overthrow .to the pitch-
er.
Palmer followed Cook's example,
stealing home after reaching base
on a walk.
Nicholson had the best hit of the
game, but was held to a double
when she overstepped the bag and
had to back track to touch it.

Higgins hit back-to-back triples.
Higgins later scored on Gary Pipe's
sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs rallied in the fifth
with Dwaine Nicholls getting two
bases on a Tiger error. Bruce
Johnston singled to get Nicholl's
home, then Mike Watson doubled
bringing Johnston home.
Watson scored as Greg Mulvey
also singled, but that was as close
as the Bulldogs could get.
Tim Fritz added one more for the
Tigers with his homerun in the
sixth to finish off the scoring and
give the Tigers a 6 - 3 win over the
Bulldogs.
Sunday night the Bulldogs
visited Belgrave to take on the Blue
Devils. The Bulldogs led off the
first inning with three runs.
Mulvey, Johnston and Nicholls
loaded the bases with walks and
Meier stepped up to the plate,
smacking a homerun and earning
the squad the inning maximum
runs.
Belgrave was unable to hold their

Three more runs came in the
third. Andrew McCutcheon reached
base on an error and Whitmore and
Brad Beuermann walked on,

hit them home with his triple.
The Blue Devils came back to
score three runs in the fourth
inning. Coultes and McPherson

inning though Nicole Procter struck
out two batters and Kellington and

flys.
Brussels scored three runs to take
a 10-8 victory.
In August of 1971 the Brussels
Recreation Board organized a
men's fastball tournament. Teams
involved included Stratford,
Wellesley, Kurtzville, Kitchener,
Thamesford, Moncrieff, Exeter,
Seaforth and two from Brussels.
Twenty-five years later the
tradition has continued with 16 of
the area's best fastball teams
arriving in Ontario's prettiest
village this weekend to participate
in the Brussels Invitational
Tournament.
The first tournament was a 10-
team single loss elimination. In
conjunction with the Brussels
centennial the tournament
increased to 20 teams in 1972. The
following year the present day
format was established and, with
the exception of 1977 when 24
teams were entered, the tournament
style has remained unchanged.
The Brussels Recreation
Committee continued to organize
the tournament through the mid-
1980s. In 1987 the Optimist Club
stepped forward to help and
remained involved until 1992. The
Brussels Tigers joined the
Optimists in 1988 and have, with
the help of the Brussels Crusaders,
been involved ever since.
