139 youngsters attend Vacation Bible School
If you happened to observe the
streets of Blyth last week between
the time of 8:45 and 9 a.m. you
might have assumed the Pied Piper
of Hamlin had come to town, as
children of Blyth and surrounding
areas, converged on the Christian
Reformed Church and the Blyth
Community Centre for an exciting,
fun-filled week of Vacation Bible
School.
Children, Grade 2 to 7 met at the
community centre auditorium each
morning for "Super Book Olympics",
a fast-paced competition, where the
"olympians" compete for the
chance to answer a Bible question
to win points for their team. Points
were also acquired for completing a
sheet of Bible questions, bringing
friends and just for being there!
The competition was hot. On the
last day the "whiz kids", squeaked
through with a five-point lead past
the "Bible brains" to win first
place.
Even as the Olympics have
commercial breaks, so did "Super
Book". Each day the children
learned an element of what a true

ELVA MAE McCLINCHEY
Elva Mae McClinchey of
Goderich, formerly of RR 1,
Auburn, died at South Muskoka
Hospital in Bracebridge on
Wednesday, July 24. She was 90.
Born in East Wawanosh Twp.,
she was the daughter of the late
William and Clara (McDowell)
Walden.
She was a member of the Bethel
Pentecostal Church in Goderich.
Mrs. McClinchey was married to
the late Sydney A. McClinchey.
She is survived by her children,
Rena and John Forster of Lucknow;
Harold and Doris McClinchey of
RR 2, Goderich; Garth and Ruth
McClinchey of Goderich; Lloyd
and Eileen McClinchey of RR 1,
Auburn; Gladys and Paul Hutchins
of Bala; and Ruth McClinchey of
Huronview.
Also surviving are 16
grandchildren and 32 great-grand-
children.
She is also survived by a sister-
in-law, Mary Walden of Blyth.
She was predeceased by one
grandson; one brother, Lloyd
Walden; and two sisters, Mabel
Jennings and Madeline Harburn.
The funeral was held at the
Tasker Chapel of the Beattie-
hero really is through a "This is
Your Life" game show, in which a
Biblical mystery guest was
identified and a prize awarded.
Monday's theme "I Have a
Dream" featured the Biblical
character of Joseph, and was
reinforced with the more
contemporary hero, Martin Luther
King. The children also learned
some catchy songs which they
performed for family and friends at
a potluck lunch on Friday.
At the "Kingdom of the Son"
program for ages seven and under,
children began each morning at
9:00 a.m. with a sing-song led by
Darlene VanderVeen. The children
learned some new fun safari songs
to sing praises to God. With lots of
clapping, footstomping, actions and
greetings of "Jambo!" the children
nearly raised the roof with their
enthusiasm.
At the end-of the week, the
children were given a tape
featuring the songs they had
learned.
Next with a skit performance,

Mr. Finefellow) treated the children
to a different safari adventure each
day. After a week of plotting to
steal the elephant's tusks for their
ivory, Mr. Turnheart realized at the
end of the week the error of his
ways. Through the words and
actions of his companions, and
with the help of God, he
experienced a change of heart to do
right and serve God first.
Then the children were led by
Sjaarda in a Bible storytime where
they learned different parts of The
Lord's Prayer and its message for
them.
On different days the children
had their faces painted as jungle
animals, and also got dressed in
cheetah, lion and zebra costumes to
have a snapshot taken as a
keepsake.
At the end of the week each child
was given a "prayer rock" to
remind them to talk to Jesus every
day.
