THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1996 Blyth United Sunday School classes get awards It was Pentecost 2 and the seasonal colour green at the service at Blyth United Church Sunday, June 9. Rev. Stephen Huntley, minister conducted the service and Barbara Bosman was organist. It was also Sunday School Awards Sunday. Rev. Huntley opened the service with greetings then Call to Worship. He led the congregation in singing The Celebration Song, accompanying on guitar. This was followed by the opening hymn, All People that on Earth do Dwell. Following the children's hymn, K. Procter leads Mennonite worship Kathy Procter was worship leader for the Sunday, June 9 service at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship. Anne Hemingway was pianist and Mervin Lichty was song leader. Darlene Hemingway played for the offertory. Norman Barlow brought the message entitled "Achieving Your Goals in Life". "The Bible is our instruction book for the Life," he said. He spoke about three principles for pursuing goals. The first one is: "Be sure to know the exact nature of whatever you invest your time, money and energy into." Another principle is: "Find someone who has already accomplished what you want to, and ask for advice." It is necessary to get counsel and advice but be sure the person who is giving this advise is a person of personal integrity, who will tell you the truth, Barlow said. "The most important principle is to make Christ the center of your life. If you have worldly success but you don't have Christ in your life you have nothing. Don't sacrifice the presence of Jesus Christ, because nothing else is worth it." Tim Harden will bring the message next Sunday. Auburn Missionary Church was filled again as Roy Dreaning from Ireland sang two solos I Wonder Why and He Will Dry Up Your Tears. The male quartette consisting of Bruce Russel, Graham Russel, Clare Smith and Clarke Teal, sang /t is Well with My Soul which was very touching indeed. Rev. John Bennett of Faith Mission brought an inspiring and thought-provoking message, with scripture from Gen. 6: 3; I Sam. 15: 24,35 and Matt. 25: 12. The Bible relates several times when God tells of a final time. Noah preached righteousness but many failed to listen. The Bible tells of a time when God's Spirit will not always strive with man. When God sends judgement, He always makes provision before so people can be saved, Rev. Bennett said. God closed the door of the ark. God's final call had been given and they didn't listen. In I Samuel God had been Jesus, Friend of Little Children awards were given out. Ann Elliott, Donna Moore and Janice Peters presented them to the various Sunday School classes. Included in the awards was special mention to retiring teachers of 14 to 16 years of service, Evelyn Caldwell, Erica Clark, Kathy Fraser and Kim Ferguson. The Old Testament lesson from Genesis and the Old Testament from Romans were read by Harvey Snell. Rev. Huntley delivered the Gospel reading from Matthew, chapter 9, verses 9 - 13 and 18 - 26 speaking to Saul many times, but Saul took things into his own hands and through his disobedience ignored God. "Is there something in your life that should be destroyed?" Rev. Bennett asked. Some day it will destroy you. Don't wait for God to do a miracle before you receive Him. Death silences God's voice. The Brussels and Seaforth Christian Home Educators met at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship on Friday, May' 24 to hear prepared speeches from the children. Les Cook was present to evaluate each of the speeches and give some pointers for improvements on their next speeches. Everyone enjoyed the presenta- tions and were pleased with student's accomplishments. Partici- pating were: Michelle and Destiny from which he based his sermon. Rev. Huntley said, Douglas Hyde was an editor before he found Jesus and became a great apostle to Christianity. Piri Thomas was a drug pusher and thief before he found Jesus in a prison cell. John Newton was a slave trader before he found Jesus, became a minister and went on to write great hymns such as Amazing Grace. Paul of Tarus persecuted Christians before he became one of the greatest apostles of Christianity the world has ever known. The excellent attendance at each service this past week has enjoyed the message and music by Rev. John Bennett and Roy Dreaning. Lorna Dreaning spoke to the children in junior church. May God bless the Faith Mission workers as they labour for Him in this part of His vineyard. Lichty, Becky and Allison Rapson, Jeremy, Amanda and Johnathon Schwartzentruber, Timothy and Holly Kenyon, Fauve, Tyler and Shandi den Dekker, Jared, Sarah and Linda Billson. In conclusion Rev. Huntley said that the Gospel lesson he delivered tells yet another example of such a person, Matthew, a tax collector. "When Jesus called Matthew, to be one of his closest associates, it was truly remarkable. It was yet another example of Jesus' ability to see beyond what people can become if they try." Following the service, a potluck luncheon was held. The beautiful flowers decorating the sanctuary were in memory of Ruby Philp whose funeral was last Thursday.
