Seniors' day at Schneider Haus The Joseph Schneider Haus is hosting its 15th annual Seniors' Day celebrations, Tuesday, June 18. Visitors will have the opportunity to "Meet the Schneiders"! Direct descendants of Joseph Schneider will be on hand to chat with visitors about old times in the comfortable surroundings of the historic farm house. Since the Joseph Schneider Haus is the oldest surviving Pennsylvania-German Mennonite homestead in the area, many memories are rekindled when senior citizens visit the house. The homestead which has been restored to the mid-1850s is staffed by costumed interpreters so that visitors can experience "first hand" the lifestyle of the Schneider family. At this time of year the Schneiders looked forward to the new growing season to add variety to their monotonous "winter diet". Rhubarb was one of the first flavours of spring and visitors, like the Schneiders of old, will enjoy the smells and tastes of freshly baked rhubarb squares and cookies from the woodstove. The summer of 1996 marks the 100th Anniversary of Victoria Park and local park historian, Rych Mills will present an illustrated talk entitled Highlights of Victoria Park at 2 p.m. After the short talk visitors will have an opportunity to reminisce with Rych Mills and visit an exhibition which traces the history of Victoria Park, built on land which was originally part of the Schneider farm. Also of interest to visitors will be blacksmith David Robertson's hallmark exhibition, aptly titled The Schneiders and The Smiths, which explores the role played by the blacksmith and other metal workers in mid-19th century Waterloo County. Refreshments and Admissions for Seniors 55 and over are free. Everyone is welcome to visit the historic haus, four square garden and galleries.
