Judge sentences teen to 60 days in jail
Despite a plea from counsel that
his client not serve any time in jail,
Judge Gary Hunter sentenced a
young sex offender to 60 days in
jail.
A Scarborough man is spending a
few weekends in jail after pleading
guilty to a charge of over 80, when
he appeared before Judge Garry
Hunter in provincial court, Wing-
ham, May 15.
Attorney for the Crown Mary
Dionysakopoulos told Judge
Hunter that at 3:15 p.m. on March
3 a complaint was received at the
Wingham OPP detachment that a
man was lying in the snow on the
J.T. Haig, 19, appeared in Wing-
ham's provincial court on May 15
for sentencing. He had pled guilty
in March to one count of invitation
to sexual touching and one of sexu-
side of Hwy 4 north of 3elgrave.
She said that when police arrived
they found a car in the ditch. It was
still running and the keys were in
the ignition. One man was lying
outside the vehicle while another
was found in the driver's seat. Paul
Reed identified himself as the driv-
er.
There were four full bottles of
beer in the car.

Defense Counsel Mike Donnelly
noted that a specific psychiatric
diagnosis had been made and treat-
were 325 mg in 100 ml of blood.
He has a previous driving convic-
tion from 1994 in Toronto.
Duty Counsel Alan Mill asked
that Reed be allowed to serve any
jail term on an intermittent basis as
his business "would be grossly
jeopardized if he were incarcerat-
ed."
He was given a sentence of 21
days to be served on weekends, and
is suspended from driving for two
years.
ment recommended for Haig, who
is presently being counselled and
taking medication. In his defense
he said, "(My client) has indicated
a willingness to comply with these
recommendations. He appears gen-
uinely remorseful and seems to
have some insight into the serious
nature of his condition and is moti-
vated to accept treatment." He
reminded Judge Hunter that Haig
had entered a guilty plea at the first
opportunity.
Donnelly argued that incarcera-
tion in this case would not be bene-
ficial as it would interrupt Haig's
counselling and because the nature
of his offense would put him in
contact with other convicted sex
offenders. Though Donnelly said
there was no denying the situation
was serious in that the victims were
quite young, he added, "the greatest
benefit to society is that (Haig)
receive treatment."
The public exposure has also
been a deterrent to Haig, he said.
Judge Hunter, however, said he
found the age of at least one of the
victims a "particularly aggravating
fact" and felt that a greater deter-
rance was needed. He sentenced
Haig to 45 days on the first count
and 15 consecutive on the second.
Haig will also be on probation for
18 months during which time he
will not be permitted to be alone
with children under the age of 16.
