Pest control for your garden,
the natural way
/n spring, just as your thoughts
are turning to bright flowers
and tasty fruits and vegetables,
"pests" are preparing to do battle
for your garden's bounty. With
the first flush of warm, sunny
weather, hungry insects will be
merrily feeding on your lovingly
tended young shoots, and "weeds"
will be crowding your carefully
bedded seedlings.
However, before you run out
and buy chemical pesticides and
herbicides, consider that what is
and what isn't a pest depends on
your perspective. One person's
pesky dandelion is another's salad
green, and swarms of insects are a
welcome feast for many kinds of
birds. Indeed, since humans have
spread to every habitable region
of the Earth (often with
devastating effects on habitats and
wildlife) we might think of
ourselves as the "pests" - far more
successful than mere weeds!
This is no consolation when
your tomatoes are being ravaged
by cutworms. You may be
tempted to quickly fix the
problem with chemical pesticides.
But adding poisons to your garden
and lawn only disrupts the natural
pest control processes already at
work. What's worse, many
herbicides and pesticides remain
toxic for years and work their way
into the water and food supplies of
every living thing. It's a dangerous
solution.
A much better approach
requires just a little more effort.
Use high quality planting stock
that is free of disease, pests and
weed seeds when you put it in
your garden. All successful
gardens need effort. Hand
weeding and regular hoeing are
always the best solutions to
weeds.
Insect pests can be picked off
your plants by hand (wear gloves),
or washed off with a garden hose.
Install bird feeders and bird baths
in your garden. The birds they
attract will eat many of the
insects, providing a kind of
natural pest control. Even bat
houses can help.
Rotate the species of flowers
and vegetables you plant each
year, to help prevent insect
infestations and soil diseases from
getting established. Many
ordinary plant species, such as
marigold, garlic and mint, act as
natural repellents to some harmful
insects. For serious cases of
infestation, degradable biological
pesticides are available that are
less harmful to plants and animals,
but these should be used very
sparingly and never simply as a
convenience.
A healthy, productive garden is
a source of joy, an object of pride
and a testament to the love and
labour that has gone into it. A
garden that is friendly to the
environment is truly in tune with
nature's spirit. Enjoy.
