children are doing a unit on spiders.
Did you know that spiders have
eight eyes and that they all don't
live in webs? The class is looking
forward to learning more about
these interesting critters.
They had some four-legged
visitors this past week as well.
Keiryn Jacobs brought in Pokey her
hamster and Chris Holmes brought
in four kittens which, by the way,
are ready for adoption. •
The Grade is were very busy this
week writing thank you notes to
McGavin's, completing their design
projects of things found on a farm
and visiting the Seaforth Veterinary
clinic petting zoo. There they were
able to play with kittens, puppies,
watched a very playful pig, and
petted a pony and a nanny with
two kids. Last week was animal
health week.
The Grade 2 grandparent/friend
day was a great success. The songs
and poems that they have been
working on for some time went
over very well. The kids give the
guests a tour of the school, filled
out family trees and then served
them refreshments.
Grade 3s celebrated Author's Day
by reading their hard'-covered
published books to their guests.
The kids had made six batches of
cookies during the week and served
that as well as punch to their family
and friends.
For Environmental Studies the
Grade 4s took a hike up the road to
the Huron County bush to pick out
a tree that they could do a study on.

now, been planning and preparing
for the special event "Working the
Land" which will take place
Sunday and Monday, May 19 and
20, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Hundreds of seeds from the
flower and vegetable gardens have
been carefully saved and stored
from last year as part of Doon's
own seed saving program. The soil
has been turned over and worked
by hand in preparation for the
weekend that people have
traditionally set aside to plant their
gardens.
The flower, herb and vegetable
gardens help provide the "total

hours of planning and work over
the winter and early spring results
in hundreds of historically correct
varieties being planted into the
gardens on the May 24 weekend.
This year the 'Friends of Doon'
will once again be holding a
fundraising plant sale. The plants
being offered are drawn from the
site's vegetable and flower gardens
and include such heritage plants as
the Shoofly plant and Mennonite
Heirloom Orange Tomatoes. The
plants being offered have been
started and nurtured by our
volunteer garden staff from the
seeds they collected last fall.
