I won't comment on the book as I haven't read it, but the film version of
The Bridges of Madison County **** (Warner) is simply wonderful.
Meryl Streep is perfect as the farm wife who has a four-day love affair
with a National Geographic photographer (Clint Eastwood) who arrives to
shoot Iowa's famed covered bridges. While Streep's convincing and rich
performance is the core of this film, as both actor and director Clint
Eastwood continues to prove what a fine filmmaker he is. Highly
recommended! (Rated PG)
Families will no doubt welcome the release on video of The Aristocats
*** (Disney - $28.99 or less) the first of the Disney Studio's animated
features to be produced after Walt's death. Superbly drawn and animated
the film was overseen by some of the studio's most respected talents
including Frank Thomas and 011ie Johnson, whose work over the year's is
legendary A cross between Lady & The Tramp and 101 Dalmations the
plot follows a cat named Dutchess, her adorable kittens and the perils they
face when catnapped. The voice talents include Eva Gabor, Phil Harris,
Scatman Crothers, Paul Winchell and Disney stalwart Sterling Holloway
(Winnie The Pooh). (Rated G)
Other new releases also available this week include Waiting to Exhale
(Fox - $22.95 or less), a drama about four women bonded together by
friendship and unsettled love lives. The cast features Whitney Houston
and Angela Bassett. (Rated 14A)
In Steal Big, Steal Little (Polygram) Andy Garcia plays twin brothers
raised by a wealthy woman who leaves her fortune to just one of them.
(Rated PG-13)
The popular Highlander film series has been turned into an animated
adventure for younger audiences. Highlander: The Adventure Begins
(MCA - $14.95 or less) should be popular with those youngsters who
enjoy the adventures of Batman and X-Men. (Rated G)
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Rocky, the film that shot
Sylvester Stallone to superstardom. Now you can own all five of the
Rocky films in a gift set that includes rare photos and behind the scenes
stories. ($49.95 or less)
While the Matt Helm series starring Dean Martin may not hold up as
well as the James Bond films, Martin's easy going charm and the emphasis
on comedy make for light enjoyable viewing. The series which includes
The Silencers, Murder's Row, The Ambushers and The Wrecking Crew are
now available for less than $15 each.

Tally for technology
Staff and students at Walton Public School were the happy recipients of two donations last
week in their effort to raise $5,000 for the purchase of computers for each classroom. Bill
Turnbull of the Brussels Lions presented Principal Helen Crocker and student Andrea
Vanderveen with a cheque for $500 while McGavin Farm Equipment contributed $250. By
seeking individual, organization and corporate sponsors, the school hopes to reach the
$5,000 goal, at which point the Huron County Board of Education will provide monetary
support.
