V4460 X:
By John Schedler
As much as I enjoy movies, the current state of the American movie
industry and its nasty excess has begun to wear down my enthusiasm for
many current films. Lately I have been finding much more pleasure in
smaller independent and foreign films that do not cater to audiences who
measure a good film by the number of explosions per minute or by poorly
written scripts that continually recycle the same old plots.
Among the ones I would like to recommend this week is Smoke ****
(Alliance), a wonderful independent film focusing on a group of
characters whose lives intersect at a Brooklyn cigar store. Director Wayne
Wag (The Joy Luck Club) and writer Paul Auster have collaborated here
to tell these stories in a manner that's totally refreshing. The cast which
includes Harvey Keitel, William Hurt, Forrest Whitaker, Harold Perrineau
Jr., Stockard Charming and Ashley Judd is superb. Highly recommended!
(Rated PG-13)
Also worth checking out is Unstrung Heroes **** (Hollywood), the
story of a 12-year-old (Nathan Watt) whose life is overwhelmed by a sick
mother (Andie MacDowell) and odd ball inventor father (John Turturro).
Running away from home to live with his two wildly eccentric uncles
(Michael Richards and Maury Chaykin) he discovers the self-confidence
necessary to come to terms with the idiosyncrasies of life. Unstrung
Heroes is a fragile, bittersweet and genuinely moving film. Directed by
Dianne Keaton. (Rated PG)
I wish I could also recommend Cutthroat Island ** (Live) a throwback
to those swashbuckling pirate movies I used to love as a kid.
Unfortunately, while the film has a few good things to offer, on the whole
the movie is badly acted especially by leads Geena Davis and Matthew
Modine, although villain Frank Langella does have some fun with his role.
Director Renne Marlin, not known for his subtley blows up everything in
sight at the slightest provocation with most scenes and situations running
far too long. YAWN! (Rated PG-13)
A Vampire in Brooklyn *1/2 (Paramount) is Eddie Murphy's latest failed
attempt at resurrecting his floundering career. This foul-mouthed
comedy/drama about a vampire searching for a mate in the hood is a total
waste of time. (Rated R)
Other new and previewed releases this week include The Scarlet Letter
(Hollywood), a poorly received reworking of Nathaniel Hawthorne's
classic. The cast includes Demi Moore, Gary Oldman and Robert Duvall.
(Rated R)
Demi Moore also produced and stars in Now and Then (Alliance), a
comedy/drama about four women who recall their youth. Also in the cast
are Melanie Griffith, Rosie O'Donnell, Christina Ricci and Thora Birch.
(Rated PG)

MRS. COCHRANE
By Amanda Stratton
On Friday, April 5, a new
secretary, Jennifer Cochrane took
over for Mrs. Bateman.
Mrs. Cochrane was born in Sault
Ste. Marie and attended nine
different elementary schools
because her father was a travelling
salesman. She lived in cities from
one coast to the other including
Ottawa and Vancouver. Mrs.
Cochrane went to high school in
Stratford for four full years,
however. After that, Mrs. Cochrane
went to France for a year to learn
French as part of a French class.
While there, she stayed with a
family as a live-in nanny.
Mrs. Cochrane, aside from being
secretary at Grey, is secretary for
her husband's portable band saw
mill making business. She also
teaches Sunday School at the Ethel
United Church.
Mrs. Cochrane is not unfamiliar
with Grey Central. She has, in the
past, worked both in the resource
room and in the kindergarten room.
Also, she has three children who
are currently attending Grey
Central and one who has already
graduated.
Mrs. Cochrane thinks that the
hardest part of her job here is
remembering to do everything that
has to be done throughout the day.
She says the best part and what she
enjoys most is being back at Grey.
She likes being back with the
people she worked with before and
the kids, too.
About her job in general, she
says, "I like it," with a smile.
I hope that Mrs. Cochrane will be
able to stay at Grey Central doing
as wonderful job as she is for a
long time.
FEATURING
MRS. COLQUHOUN'S,
MRS. ELGIE'S AND
MRS. MARTIN'S CLASS
By Vesna Milinkovic, Jaclyn
Stafford, Stacy Stewart
Mrs. Colquhoun's Mrs. Elgie's
and Mrs. Martin's Grade 5/6 have
diligently been working on a-
variety of activities.
In health class we have been
studying about smoking and the
effects of smoking. For instance if
you smoke you may have a greater
risk of serious health problems
along with bad breath and wrinkles.
In math we are working on ratios.
Work centres about Ontario and
Canada are keeping us busy in
Language Arts. Mrs. Colquhoun
has had us "flipping" and "sliding"
in art.
On April 23, Rodney Dammeier
went to the Metro Toronto Zoo
with the "Beyond the Bars"
enrichment group. His task was to
choose an animal and do a project
on it. His animal was the
"Tasmanian Devil". He spent the
night at Hillside School and spent
another day at the zoo. He was
sorry when it was time to leave. He
seriously recommends the Metro
Zoo to anyone who is willing to
drive to Toronto.
On April 15, a "Light the Way
Cafe" was held in the afternoon and
evening for our parents. The
program included a variety of
poetry, choral speaking, dancing
and acrobatics. One of the founding
members of the "Light the Way
Children's Fund", Mrs. Leslie
Switzer, participated in the
program with us. Our class in also
going to participate in the Music
Festival in Stratford on April 22
and 23. We hope we do a good job.
On April 18 and 19 we are going
on a trip to Amherstburg, Windsor,
Dresden and London. Both Grade
5/6 classes are attending this trip.
We are gbing to The North
American Black Historical
Museum in Amherstburg,
Sandwich First Baptist Church in
Windsor where we will have
supper and then to Forester High
School.
Next morning we travel to
Dresden to Uncle Tom's cabin. On
the way home we will stop in
London at McDonald's and we get
home at 3:30 in time for buses.
Everyone is excited about the trip.
Fourteen parents are going to
accompany us as well.
On Wednesday, April 10, Mrs.
Pam Tolmay came to visit both
Grade 5 and 6 classes. Mrs. Tolmay
is the minister at Atwood,
Trowbridge and Donegal United
Churches. She grew up in South
Africa and she showed us slides of
