The Citizen, 1996-04-03, Page 22By John Schedler This week's best best is Devil in a Blue Dress **** (ColumbiafTristar) a top notch mystery set in 1948 Los Angeles starring Denzel Washington and Jennifer Beals. This steamy tale reminiscent of Roman Polanski's Chinatown is based on Walter Mosley's ground breaking first novel about an unemployed World War H veteran, who accepts a job to locate a mysterious young woman who is the key to the success or failure of a nasty mayoral campaign. The film resonates with an air of authenticity highlighted by wonderfully rhythmic dialogue, a great performance by Denzel Washington and taught direction by Carl Franklin (One False Move) Highly recommended! (Rated 14A) It's almost as if the term Dysfunctional Family were invented to describe underground artist Robert Crumb (Fritz the Cat) and his family. Filmmaker Terry Zwigoff's Crumb **** (Malofilm) is an intimate documentary that was shot over a six-year period and focuses ,,..the everyday life of Crumb and his family who, it turns out, are intMi"gent, creative, articulate and profoundly disturbed. Out of the ordinary and thoroughly fascinating. (Rated 14A) Another dysfunctional family is also the subject of Home For The Holidays (Polygram), which is much more standard Hollywood fare from director/actress Jodie Foster. I haven't had a chance to see this one, but the cast which includes Holly Hunter, Anne Bancroft, Robert Downey Jr., Charles Duming and Steve Guttenberg looks first rate. (Rated PG-13) In the end of the millennium thriller Strange Days (Fox), an ex-cop turned hustler (Ralph Fiennes) tries to prevent the murder of the woman he loves. (Rated R) Also new this week is Balto (MCA/Universal - $22.95 or less) another animated film from producer Steven Spielberg about a heroic husky who leads a team of sled dogs across the Arctic wilderness to bring much needed medicine to Nome, Alaska. (Rated G) Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna (Born Free) star in the family classic Ring of Bright Water (Fox - $16.98 or less) as two caring people who do their best to save the local otter population. (Rated G) In the classic movie department you will find Boomerang **** (Fox - $24.95 or less) an outstanding drama starring Dana Andrews as a DA who, while investigating a murder, comes to believe the man who confessed is actually innocent. Directed by Elia Kazan. (Unrated) video F.A..X. IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY. J.R.'S GAS BAR & TAKE OUT LTD. Mrs. Bateman says that she is going to spend most of her time gardening and knitting as well as having "family time". She thinks that Grey Central is the best school in the world, especially because of the kids. Her advice to our new secretary, Mrs. Cochrane, is to be patient, have fun and, enjoy learning all there is to know about being a school secretary. It will be different for a while without "Mrs. B." but we are sure that Mrs. Cochrane will do a great job at Grey.
