Blyth raises funds to bring back recess fun By Janice Becker For youngsters at Blyth Public School who have been without playground equipment since the 15- year-old wooden structure was declared unsafe, fun at recess should return by September. In co-operation with the Huron County Board of Education, the Blyth Public School Advisory Council (SAC) has begun a fundraising project to replace the playground equipment with a new structure which meets all safety standards. "The old equipment was good for the time it was built, but over the 15 years the cedar posts have rotted at ground level, the structure was Plan to come out for a fun-filled evening, and support an important cause at the Maitland Conservation Foundation's 8th annual dinner and auction, to be held Friday, May 10 at the Community Centre in Brussels. Proceeds from the event will go to support the Wawanosh Nature Centre for Conservation Education. The evening will include a roast beef dinner, live and silent auctions, and a raffle. Dave Carson of Listowel will be the auctioneer. Everyone is welcome to attend. "We are looking forward to another successful event," said Conservation Foundation Chair- man, Vince Judge. "About 260 people attended last year's dinner and auction. We hope to top that number this year." Last year businesses from Harriston, Palmerston, Listowel, Brussels, Blyth, Clinton, Seaforth, Goderich, Lucknow, Wingham, and just about everywhere in between, donated auction and raffle items or cash to the event. Over 175 items too high, the slope of the ladders were too steep and there were pinch areas," says Al Harrison, Blyth PS principal. SAC has begun to ask for support from community groups, says SAC President Brenda Young. "We will he holding fundraising events as well as seek donations from clubs and individuals." It is also hoped that community members will donate labour for the installation of the new equipment. The success of fundraising will determine the extent of equipment purchased, but Harrison says SAC and school staff are hoping for $10,000 to $15,000 for the pur- chase of a multi-stage activity cen- tre, primary for use by the younger were donated. This year businesses and individuals will have the opportunity of sponsoring a table at the dinner. Tickets for the event are available for $20 single or $40 a couple. Those wishing to reserve a table can take advantage of a special offer by purchasing a table of eight tickets. For information on tickets, or to make a donation call (519) 335-3557. The Wawanosh Nature Centre provides the opportunity for students to learn about how to manage and protect the environ- ment. Over 5,000 students visit the centre annually from Huron, Perth, Bruce, and Wellington Counties. The Centre is located on Conc. 6-7, Nature Centre Road, of East Wawanosh Township. The facility provides activities for students from grades kindergarten to Grade 10. The Wawanosh Nature Centre is operated by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. The Maitland Conservation Foundation (MCF) is a local, children. "Blyth has a limited playground area," says Young. "Making the equipment available will keep the younger children in that area and allow the older students .to use more Space." The board of education has agreed to cover the cost of digging up the site forinstallation and com- pleting the project to safety stan- dards, say Harrison. It is hoped parents will volunteer the labour for installation, (under appropriate supervision). The return of playground equip- ment will also provide a play area for the children on this side of town, instead of having to cross charitable, non-profit organization that supports conservation projects being undertaken by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. For the past eight years the MCF has been a major supporter of the Wawanosh Nature Centre. Hwy 4 to get to Lions 1 ark, he says. If SAC can get financial commit- - merit for the project through dona- tions and club support, even if over a two year period, it is hoped the project will begin in the spring, to be completed by fall. Anyone interested in contributing to the project should contact the SAC or the school. Cheques should be made payable to the Blyth Pub- lic School Creative Playground Project. Receipts will be issued. Conservation auction, May 10
