Palm Sunday service
Science in motion

Palm Sunday services were
celebrated at Calvin-Brick and
Knox United Church, Belgrave on.
Sunday,Narch 31 with the Youth
Group assisted by the Sunday
School students in charge.
Easter lilies and spring flowers
decorated the Belgrave United
Church as the congregation was
greeted by Annie Cook and Muriel
Coultes. Candice Irwin welcomed
all to the service and introduced the
hymns for song time.
Courtney McGee led in the call
to worship, with Candice leading in
the Prayer of Approach and Prayer
of Confession.
The men's quartet, consisting of
George Procter, John 'McIntosh,
Bill Coupes and Lorne Campbell,
sang the anthem Were You There.
Amanda Palmer read the
scripture from Matthew telling the
story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem
on Palm Sunday. During the
singing of the hymn -Lord of the
Dance, the members of the Sunday
School presented palm leaves to the
congregation.
The children's story, "The
Withered Fig Tree" was read by
Becky Logan at Calvin-Brick and
Peggy Procter in Belgrave, after
which Jim McCracken led in
responsive Psalm 118, paraphrased
by James Taylor.
During the sermon the youth
The general meeting of the
Belgrave United Church Women
was held on Thursday evening,
March 28 at 8 p.m. in the church
basement.
Wilma Higgins, president,
welcomed everyone and opened the
meeting with the poem "An Easter
Wish".
Louise Bosman, assisted by
Wilma conducted the worship
service. Hymns Let There Be Peace
on Earth and The Breath of Spring
were sung. Mrs. Bosman and Mrs.
Higgins read "The Passion Week
Story".
The offering was received and
dedicated and Mrs. Bosman closed
the worship with prayer.
Karrin Marks entertained with
two piano solos.
Tanya Verhurg, Community
Developer-Advocate of Women's
Shelter and Counselling Service of
Huron was unable to attend as
guest speaker, owing to sudden
illness in her family.
Mabel Wheeler introduced Rev.
Alan Rush, who had volunteered to
present the program. He introduced
the theme "Compassion for
Children" and presented a video
depicting the life of Jessica - an 11-
year-old girl of Guatemala... This
was followed by group discussion.
.Rev. Rush continued with
information on the Mission and
Service Fund supported by a video
showing four locations where the
people benefit from UCW M & S
contributions.
On. behalf of the UCW Mrs.
Higgins expressed thanks to Rev.
group acted out the story of "The
Last Supper". Maureen Hopf
(leader of the. youth group) was the
High Priest, Paul Walker was
Judas, Kevin Hopf was Peter and
Becky Logan was John. Other
actors- were Amanda Palmer, Ken
and Jim McCracken, Karrin•Marks,
Peggy Procter, Heather and Vicki
Black.
CoUrtney McGee entered as
Jesus and began to wash the feet of
the disciples and served them the
"Last Supper". Two members built
a cross which was left for Easter
Sunday.
Extras taking part were Jenni and
Trevor Hopf, Kristen Palmer,
Michele Nixon and Mark
McCracken.
The offering was received by Jim
McCracken and Kevin Hopf.
Karrin Marks led in prayer.
Following the commissioning
and benediction the congregation
sang Maki Me a Channel of Your
Peace as the Youth Group removed
all the decorations and symbols
from the church sanctuary in
preparation for Good Friday and
Easter Sunday.
Easter Sunday services will be
taken by Rev. Peter Scott,
executive secretary of London
Conference, London. He will also
conduct the installation of the
church officers-at this time.
Rush and presented him with a
token of appreciation.
Mrs. Higgins conducted the
business. She announced registra-
tion forms for Camp Mencsetung
were available. The Sunday School
anniversary will be June 16 with
speaker, Ruth Gordon.
The Vacation Bible School will
be Aug. 26 - Aug. 30 for which the
UCW will supply cookies. The
pancake supper will be held
Wednesday, April 10 from 5 p.m; -
7 p.m. in the church basement.
The April event is in Mitchell,
April 22, at 6:30 p.m. with the
UCW conference in St. Thomas
April 15-16.
It was decided the flower
committee would purchase Easter
lilies for the church.
Rev. Rush closed the meeting
with prayer. Lunch was served by
Edith Vincent and Mildred Yuill.
The Grade 8s hosted a turkey
bingo on Wednesday, March 27 at
East Wawanosh Public School.
This was a fundraiser for their
upcoming trip to Quebec.
The winners were: Joan Pletch,
any vertical plus any horizontal
line; Patti Nixon, all around outside
of card; Mark McCracken, Ricky
Carter, Tammy Frieburgcr and
Michele Nixon, kids game letter X;
Linda Baxter, letter H; Patti Nixon
and Eve Buchanan, share the
wealth - full card; Laura Finlay,
any vertical line; Linda, Baxter-,
letter Z; Joan Pletch, any horizontal
line; Mary Robinson, all around the
free square; Nicole Meier, Laura
Finlay, Kenny McCracken and Erin
Rochetta, kids game letter T; Sam
Thompson, any horizontal line;
Michele Thompson, share the
wealth - full card; John Thompson,
any two horizontal lines; Heather
Rochetta, four corners.
Raffle draws were won by:
Margie Gordon and Nicole Meier, a
turkey; Maureen Hopf and Michele
Nixon, tupperware, donated by
Isabel Campbell.
The students are grateful to Paul

WMS meets
The WMS held its meeting at the
home of Irma Mason on Monday.
Margaret . Sicrtscma opened with
a prayer. The WMS purpose was
read in unison.
Beneath the Cross of Jesus was
read in unison. Freda Scott read
scripture from St. John.

Grade 8s are a barbecue at Brian's
Valu-Mart, Wingham from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.
Plans arc also underway for a ham
and scallop potato supper on
Thursday, May 2 at the Women's
Institute Hall.
