Blyth 523-4700 Open Tuesday - Saturday By Bonnie Gropp Blyth council passed in principle a draft budget that would sec some change due to the county-wide assessment, but which was based on the 1995 mill rate. Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart presented the draft for council's consideration at the April 1 meet- ing. While the budget would have minimal affect as far as the munici- pal tax levy, the bad news was the decrease in revenue. Due to the assessment, the revenue from com- mercial taxation would be approxi- mately $7,300 more than last year, while it would be just over 52,000 less in commercial. Revenue from business has been budgeted as close to $2,000 less than last year as well. For payments received in lieu of taxes, the village will receive $52,000 less than in 1995. "Making do with less. It's part of the new lifestyle," said Councillor Doug Scrimgeour. Grants arc also anticipated to he less than in 1995, by just over 58,0(X). Stewart, however, noted that in preparing the revenue side of the budget he estimates on the modest side. "1 always use the worst case scenario." Before passing the motion to approve the draft in principle, Councillor Robbie Lawrie verified that council would still have the final say on any mon6 spent. "Absolutely, the budget is really just your best guess," said Stewart.
