THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1996 PAGE 9.
70 people attend Belgrave WI potluck dinner
More than 70 persons enjoyed a
delicious potluck dinner on
Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the Women's
Institute Hall, following the
blessing, which was pronounced by
the Rev. Cathrine Campbell. The
guest speakers for the program
were Jennifer Dierolf and Cheryl
Myers of the Wingham Community
Living Association. They were
introduced and welcomed by
Nancy Jardin, convenor for the
meeting.
Ms. Dierolf explained the work
of the association as servicing
adults with developmental disabili-
ties. She gave an instance of the life
of a young girl, who prior to the
work of CLAs suffered from a lack
of both physical and mental
stimulation. The girl's life was
completely transformed when she
later received the necessary
stimulation from the social worker
who adopted her.
Ms. Dierolf augmented the
presentation with slides depicting a
number of their cl;ents and the
various aspects of their lives. She
emphasized the fact that the aim of
the association is to encourage
independence in the clients.
The 24-hour support staff usually
inquire as to the client's needs and
will then try to accommodate.
Clients may choose contracts with
employers and get paid for them
and they also do a lot of voluntary
work.
Ms. Dierolf said clients enjoy
having the opportunity to make
choices in their day-to-day living.
Ms Meyers, who is a community
support worker, said that her goal is
to enhance the lives of clients by
encouraging them to visit places
like private homes or nursing
homes. She mentioned that most of
the clients like to travel. Trips
which they have recently enjoyed
have been to Nashville and to
Florida.
Both women mentioned the need
for volunteers, who many contact
them at the CLA centre in
Wingham.
Dorothy Coultes, Women's Insti-
tute President, added her thanks.
She then asked the members to stay
for a short business meeting and
everyone else was invited to stay
and play cards, if they so desired.
Following the meeting Mrs.
Coultes reminded everyone that the
library will now be open on
Wednesday evenings, and also
when the hall is open for potluck
meals. The next one will be held on
March 5, when Mrs. Ada Taylor
will show a video of the closing of
the Anglican church and also
highlights of local evpnts in 1995.
Everyone is welcome.
