The Citizen, 1995-12-20, Page 46MX!
By John Schedler
If you're looking for something to watch after all the Christmas
festivities settle down there are a considerable number of new offerings on
home video this week.
Leading off the list is Clueless *** (Paramount) an engaging comedy
satire about life in Los Angeles among the rich and terminally hip. Alicia
Silverstone is perfect as the perky Beverly Hills airhead who discovers
that life is a bit more complicated than she thought. This is also director
Amy Heckerling's best film since Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Good
Fun! (Rated PG-13)
Other highly recommended films I'm sure many of you will enjoy
include The Secret of Roan lnish **** (Columbia/Tristar), a delightful
Irish tale from American John Sayles. The story follows the efforts of a
10-year-old girl as she searches for her lost brother who, it has been
rumoured, now lives among the seals who inhabit the west coast of
Ireland. Pure magic! (Rated PG)
Director Louis Malle's last film Vanya On 42nd Street **** (Malofilm)
is a superb adaptation by noted playwright David Marnmet of Chekhov's
drama of people trapped between the harsh reality of their lives and the
longing of their hearts. The story is inventively told in the form of a
rehearsal of the play at an abandoned Broadway theatre (the historic New
Amsterdam) by a great ensemble cast led by Wallace Shawn and Jullianne
Moore. (Rated PG)
Albert Finney turns in another wonderful performance in A Man of No
Importance (***1/2) a touching tale of a Dublin bus conductor who
dreams of mounting a production of Salome by Oscar Wilde at a local
church hall. Needless to say there are those who look at the play as
"blasphemous" and do their best to stop the production. (Rated PG-13)
Among the new and unpreviewed list you will find Judge Dredd
(Hollywood) a high powered sci-fi action adventure starring Sylvester
Stallone, Armand Assante and Diane Lane. (Rated R)
In Men of War (Dimension) Dolph Lundgren leads a group of
mercenaries hired to destroy a small South sea island. (Rated R)
The story of King Arthur, Guinevere and Sir Lancelot gets another go
around in First Knight (Columbia/Tristar) this time under the direction of
Jerry Zucker (Airplane etc.). Not it's not a comedy. (Rated PG-13)
Bruce Willis takes his third stab at stopping terrorists cold in Die Hard
With a Vengeance (Fox). This time he teams up with Samuel L. Jackson
as they try to find a mad bomber (Jeremy Irons) who has planted
explosives throughout New York City. (Rated R)
John Candy's final movie Canadian Bacon (Polygram) involves an
American President who tries to distract disgruntled citizens by declaring
war on Canada. Directed by Michael Moore (Roger and Me) (Rated PG).
And finally fans of the popular video game will probably love Mortal
Kombat (Alliance) the live action big budget kick fest starring Christopher
Lambert and a cast of nobodies. (Rated 14A)
