Vandal gets probation
The grads
These people took part in the Living Well program sponsored by the Huron County Health
Unit. Back row, from left: Mildred Copeland of Belmore, Myrtle Metcalfe of Belmore, Joan
Jacobs of Brussels. Front: Arnold Jeffray of Belmore, Public Health Nurse Marguerite
Thomas and Marguerite Saxon of Cranbrook.
A night of mischief resulted in a
12 month probation period for a
Brussels-area youth.
Ryan Newman, 18, of RR3,
Brussels was one of several young
people charged with the breaking
of 15 windows at The Ark Youth
Drop-in Centre in the early hours of
Sept. 27.
Crown Attorney told Judge
R.G.E. Hunter in Wingham's
provincial court, Dec. 6 that New-
man had been celebrating his 18th
birthday with friends, when around •
midnight they starting throwing
marbles at the windows in The Ark.
Damage estimate was $300.
Newman has no previous record.
Duty Counsel Alan Mill said that
the other youths involved were all
young offenders and reminded
Judge Hunter that while Newman
did take part he did not act alone.
Judge Hunter granted a condi-
tional discharge, along with the
probationary sentence, which
includes 50 hours of community
service.

Public Health Nurse Marguerite
Thomas who works out of the
Brussels Health Unit office says
that arrangements have been made
with the Registered Practical Nurs-
es to continue to provide foot care
on a fee for service basis.
In Brussels those in need of foot-
care services can contact Janina
Speers at 887-9859 or Thea Trick
a t 887-9952.
A recently completed program at
the Health Unit office was "Living
Well — A Healthy Lifestyle Pro-
gram". Primarily geared to seniors,
the program, led by Thomas, coy-
ers a wide range of issues that
apply to most age groups. From
active sitting, to self-esteem,
assertiveness and humour, the pro-
gram talked about many things that
work together to make the most of
life.
Thomas notes the positive focus
of many of the lessons. "This work-
shop was like home on the range,
'where seldom was heart a discour-
aging word'."
Thomas has been doing the Liv-
ing Well workshops since coming
to the Health Unit seniors program
two years ago. She touches base
with 'graduating' participants to
check on how they are doing and
see if they are continuing to prac-
tise Living Well.
