Grey Central Echo
Students, staff remember David
Grey Central Echo
A sure sign of Christmas is snow
and report cards. Grey Central's
teachers have been busy working
on new computerized report cards.
These report cards will be sent
home on Friday, Nov. 24 and most
parent interviews will be held on
Thursday evening and on Friday
during the day because Friday,
Dec. 1 is a P.D. day.
A meeting of the Parents'
Advisory Council will be held on
Monday, Nov. 27.
On Thursday, Nov. 23 Mrs.
Colinson from Atwood will be
visiting our school to tell stories to
the Early Years to Grade 6 pupils.
Many pupils have been busy
preparing posters for the Brussels
Santa Claus Parade.
David Harrison
Monday, Nov. 13 was a sad day
at Grey Central. As the students
returned to school after the
weekend they learned that one of
our Grade 8 students would not be
with us. David Harrison and his
father had died in a car accident the
day before.
David came to Grey Central in
Grade 7 and although he was only
with us a short time, in his own
quiet way, he left a positive
impression on us.
His classmates remember him as
a guy who never said anything
mean, a real easy person with
whom to get along. As a student he
was polite, was someone who
minded his own business and cared
about people. They recalled David
loved basketball, always looked his
best, did his work without
complaint and always listened to
what others had to say.
Although David's time with us
was short we will miss him at Grey
Central. Our sympathy is extended
to David's family.
Grade 6/7 News
By Devin Shannon and
Sonya Schultz
Students from Grade 6/7 are
working on Social Studies projects
about different countries and also
about news from all around the
world.
In science we are learning about
machines that make work easier.
In French class we are learning
about different rooms of the house.
This week we enjoyed learning
about Christopher Columbus and
his journey to the new world which
he thought would be India. Now we
Remembrance Day
A Remembrance Day service
was held at Grey Central on Friday,
Nov. 10.
This year the two Grade 5/6
classes were responsible for
presenting it. They chose the theme
"peace" to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of the United Nations.
Rodney Dammeier and Joel
Hemingway acted as masters of
ceremony.
The program began with the
singing of 0 Canada followed by
are sending the information home
with the students who wanted to
share it with their families.
In Grade 6 we had four winners
for the Legion Remembrance
poster, poem and essay contest.
Rachel deBoer won second for the
black and white poster, Sonya
Schultz won third for the black and
white and Jamie Lewis got a first
for her colour poster. She has been
asked to enter her poster into a
bigger contest.
Mike Walsh also won a first and
has been asked to enter his. There

some students in Mr. Garland's
class presenting the word "Peace"
in several different languages.
The students then sang, I'd Like
to Teach the World to Sing and a
small group demonstrated a Jewish
round and dance called Shalom.
Rodney and Joel read an
abbreviated version of "Sadako and
the Thousand Paper Cranes". This
was followed by the students
singing Let There Be Peace.
The Grade5/6 then shared what
peace meant to them.
Prior to the service every pupil in
the school had traced and cut out
their hand shape on the gym wall
with the U.N. Peace symbol in the
middle of the wreath. Poppies and
doves were placed on the wreath by
two members from each class.
Mrs. Bateman and Mr. Statia
represented the staff, while Mrs.
Armstrong and Mrs. Stafford
represented the Parents' Advisory
Council. The poppies reminded us
of those who fought for our
freedom, the hands represented our
desire to work together for a better
community and country and the
doves symbolized our desire for
peace throughout our world. The
Last Post was played followed by a
minute of silence.
Our Remembrance Day service
concluded with the students quietly
returning to their classroom.
