My pick as the week's best new release is My Family **** (Alliance), a
sprawling and passionate epic about one family's history beginning with
immigration from Mexico to the U.S. in the 1920s. A rich and compelling
film, My Family is one of few American films to present Mexicans as real
people and not the commonly stereotyped villains and illiterates. This
emotional rollercoaster of a film also boasts some of the finest award
calibre performances of the year especially from Jimmy Smits, Esai
Morales, Edward James Olmos and many others whose names are
unfamiliar to most of us.
My Family was produced by Francis Ford Coppola The Godfather and
written and directed by Gregory Nava whose previous film El None
(1983) also dealt with the plight of immigrants both legal and illegal
searching for a better life. Both of these films are unforgettable and I
highly recommend them to you. (Rated 14A)
Also enjoyable is The Cure *** (MCA/Universal) the touching drama
of two young boys, one shunned because he has AIDS, the other a lonely
latch-key kid who set off on a raft down the Mississippi in search of a
New Orleans doctor who claims to have a cure for the dreaded illness.
(Rated PG-13)
I didn't care for Mad Love *** (Touchstone) a contemporary tale of two
teenage lovers who hit the road to the great open spaces of the American
Southwestern. The film features good performances from Chris O'Donnell
and Drew Barrymore, but the cliches drove me to hit the stop button on
my VCR a little past the halfway point. (Rated PG-13)
Among this week's other new releases you will find Miracle on 34th
Street (Fox - $16.95 or less), a remake of the popular 1947 classic about a
department store Santa who claims to be the real thing. This version stars
Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins and Dylan McDermott. (Rated
PG)
Fans of the big explosions and loud action movies may want to check
out Bad Boys (Columbia/Tristar) starring TV's Will Smith and Martin
Lawrence. (Rated R of course)
Some of you may also be interested in Gordy (Alliance) the first of this
year's talking pig movies. As for me I think I'll wait for Babe which is also
due out soon. (Rated G)
With the release of the new James Bond film Golden Eye due in theatres
this month, MGM/UA Home Video is releasing many of the early 007
films in their library. Among these remastered editions you will find Dr.
No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live
Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diamonds are Forever and Live
and Let Die, each priced at $14.95 or less.
The deluxe gift set priced at around $90 includes the six Sean Connery
films plus a bonus cassette featuring behind the scenes footage from
Goldfinger and Thunderball. Available in both Pan and Scan and
widescreen versions.

to Stephan's Apiary to get some
insight into the busy life of a
beekeeper.
Many students had the opportun-
ity to try on the outfit of a
beekeeper and to visit the hive
where the bees were all busy
getting ready for winter. Some of
the bees became disturbed and so it
was a good thing the students had
the beekeeper's outfit on.
While at the apiary, Mr. and Mrs.
Stephan showed the students their
beehouse where they process the
honey they have collected. The
students were treated to some
recently made honey.
All in all, the trip was well worth
it as they learned lots about bees.
