For many, images of World War
I and II have come from history
books and discussions in school.
As the years pass, there are fewer
and fewer veterans or families of
our fighting men and women who
can recount what life was like
during those long years from 1914
to 1918 and 1939 to 1945.
Ruby Philp, formerly of Blyth,
now of Huronview, Clinton, was
just 11 years old when WWI broke
out. By the time the second World
War began, Philp was a married
woman of 36 and living in Blyth.
Of those days, she remembers the
busyness of the community.
"People were too busy worrying
about the boys overseas to have
difficulties with the rations. We
seemed to manage okay."
"Everyone was very good in
Blyth. We all worked to help out."
Jim Smith of Brussels, then only
nine, has one vivid memory of that
day in mid-November, when WWI
ended.
"I remember the village bell
gonging. It was not a ring. It
gonged. It was my duty to go to the
trustees of our school to ask if we
could have the rest of the day off. It
was 68° that day."
He recalls stories from the POW
camps, which took a tremendous
toll on the young men. Smith's
father's cousin was 38 years old
when taken prisoner of war. His
waist was 38 inches when he went
in; just six months later it was only
18, says Smith.
Personal memories may be lost
as another generation disappears,
but on Nov. 11 take time to
remember. Tribute
Piper Rick Elliott and drummer Bill Nethery led the colour party of the Blyth Branch Royal
Canadian Legion out of Blyth United Church last Sunday morning where a special
Remembrance Day service was held.
