Squirt Girls clinch ball title
The Brussels Tigers were
officially honoured as the Huron
County Fastball League's best
Saturday night when they were
presented with the 1995
Championship Trophy at the year-
end banquet held in Seaforth.
The Tigers, who finished the
regular schedule in first place,
captured the league title with
playoff series wins over the
Brussels Bulldogs, Monkton and
the Lieury Red Sox.
In the final game of the season,
the Brussels Squirt Girls ball team
took on the Teeswater squad on
Sept. 29, to battle for the WOAA
championship.
Brussels broke the 1-1 tie in the
bottom of the second when two
runs crossed the plate.
The opponents fought back with
one in the third before the home-
As well the Bulldogs, who
rebounded from their opening
round loss to defeat Walton and
Francistown, were presented with
the "B" Championship Trophy.
Individual team MVP plaques
were also presented. Local winners
included Steve Fritz (Tigers), John
Miners (Bulldogs), Brad Knight
(Walton), Mike Bromley (Blyth),
Brad Robinson (Belgrave) and Jeff
Smith (Monkton).
town players blasted two homeruns
in the bottom of the fourth to take a
6-2 lead.
The round trippers were smacked
by Courtney Sallows and Amy
Douma.
Not giving in, Teeswater rallied
for two more in the fifth, but were
unable to overcome the four run
deficit.
The championship was the first
for the Tigers in their five years of
Huron County Fastball. Always a
strong regular schedule team, the
Tigers have struggled in previous
playoff years winning only four of
12 playoff games. This season they
lost the opening game, then won
six of the next seven played for the
title.
Offensively the Tigers were led
by Doug Shaw who batted .750 in
the 1995 playoffs.
Brussels capped off the game
with one more run in the final
frame.
Lesley Pepper pitch a great five
innings, striking out 13.
Prior to defeating Teeswater in
three games, Brussels had put Bel-
more out in three and were victori-
ous over New Hamburg in a series
which went the five-game distance.
