These homes are a safe place for anyone who needs help. Please remember to display your sign only when you are home and available to provide assistance. Donna White - Brussels Block Parent Chairman 19 attend Majestic meeting Nineteen ladies attended the Majestic Women's Institute meeting on Oct. 11. President Ruth Sauve opened the meeting with a reading on "The animal in man". Convener Leona Connelly introduced the guest speaker, Maree Collinson, a retired school teacher. Collinson, after retiring, still wanted to be involved with young people so began story telling on the different cultures. This was demonstrated by a number of stories which she presented to the'• members, while being dressed in a related costume. One story told is based on a plate named the Blue Willow, which depicts the King's home, the building which imprisoned his daughter, a boat and two birds in flight. She is also interested in finding the stories relating to the plate series the Pink Tower and the Blue Tower. Leona Armstrong thanked her for her interest and enthusiasm in history which enlightened the members to want to learn more. Business brought up included a donation to the poppy fund and Kate Wilson will lay the wreath on Nov. 11. The card party committee consisted of Peggy Keffer, Sandra Clarke, Jean Bell and Eleanor Hemingway. A reminder was given of the County Rally on Oct. 16 at Gorrie, with six items being donated to the craft and bake table. Yvonne Knight and Kathy Bridge gave reports on the Area Convention held at Arthur on OCt. 4 and 5. The centennial rose can be ordered in the new year, a special invitation to Women's Institute members to attend the Blue Jay's game on June 8, 1996 were just a couple of items brought up. Roll call, "What we inherited from the Canadian Indian," was answered with basket weaving, canoes, beadwork and arrowheads. Ruby Steiss left the members chuckling with numerous "Smiles", she read. Leona Connelly gave the motto, "Home is the golden setting in which mother is the brightest jewel." She closed with a Dedication to My Mother. Happy birthday was sung to Jean Bell, Ida Evans, Glenna Stephens and Verna Tunney before having lunch. The next meeting will be held on Nov. 8 with a Wheat Ornament Demonstration being done. Brussels People Lawrence and Mildred Jacklin spent four leisurely days travelling through Northern Ontario, returning on Friday, Oct. 13. The weather was warm and sunny and the leaves still bright and colourful. They took highway 89 to 400, then Hwy. 11 to North Bay and Matheson where they crossed over to Hoyle and Timmins, before taking Hwy. 144 to Sudbury. They then took Hwy. 17 to Elliot Lake, then turned back to Sudbury taking Hwy. 69 back to Barrie and home. They covered 1,175 miles and enjoyed the pleasant trip. Many relatives and friends attended the sacrament of baptism at the Brussels United Church on Sunday morning. Received into the fellowship of Christ's Church were: Heather Lynn, daughter of Murray and Mariann Bone; Adam James, son of Ken and Sheila Cousins; Aislin Marie Kathleen Jardine, daughter of Victoria Jardine; Nathan Michael, son of Michael and Valerie Watson, all of Brussels; and Victoria Anne, daughter of Robert and Alysson Cardiff of London. Geoffrey Hamann of Kitchener, grandson of Jack and Audrey Cardiff, played three solos on his violin for the congregation. Rev. Cam McMillan chose as his sermon "Two Baptisms". Choir members sang the anthem God Is So Wonderful accompanied by Alice Brothers at the piano. A lovely brass piano lamp was donated by Alice and Lyle in loving memory of their daughter, Darlene. Rev. Dr. Bruce McLeod, former moderator. At 7:30 the choir is featuring favourite anthems and quartets from Harriston and Neustadt, with congregational singing. UCW meets in church parlour The October meeting of Brussels UCW was held on Wed., Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. in the church parlour. Audrey Cardiff took the president's chair. Rene Richmond read the September report which was approved. The treasurer's report was given by Isabel Wheeler. Donations were made and correspondence was read. Worship opened with Joan Bernard asking, "What is Thanksgiving". For the First of All Creation was sung with Betty Campbell as pianist. Different chapters were read by Joan Bernard and Luella Mitchell. A reading, "Blessing to God for Thankful Heart" was done by Sarah Stephenson. Laura Barbour led in prayer. Luella read a story, "Bow at Thanksgiving". We Praise You 0 God was sung. Rene read a poem, "Thanksgiving Around the Table." Barbara McMillan read a poem, "Born before 1945" and closed with prayer. A delicious lunch was served by Laura Barbour and Jean Bridge. The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge met on Tuesday, Oct. 10 with a good attendance. District Deputy President Sister Irma Cartwright of Huron District No. 23 and her installing team from Clinton were present as well as Sister Leola Harrison, D.D. Pres. of Stratford District. Sister Mary Davidson introduced and welcomed Sister Cartwright. The Installation of Officers was held. They are: Noble Grand, sister Betty Cardiff; Vice Grand, Laura Barbour; Secretary, Mary Lowe; Financial Secretary, Lois McCall; Treasurer, 'Lorraine Edwards; Warden, Sister Rene Richmond; Conductor, Sister Lillian Moses; Right Supporter of Noble Grand, Sister Joan Bernard; Left Supporter of Noble Grand, Sister Helen Bray; 7 tables at euchre Seven tables of euchre were_ played at the Majestic Women's Institute card party on Oct. 2. Lucky winners were: high lady, Ruby Steiss; high man, Allen Edgar; lone hands, lady, Iona McLean; men, Ross Stephenson and Reinhardt Bauer; low lady, Sarah Stephenson; low man, Mel Jacklin; lucky tallies, Jim Smith, June Jacklin, Leslie Knight, Isabelle Craig, Stewart Musgrove, Dorothy Dilsworth, Richard Elliott, Viola Edgar, Jean Bridge, Helen Dobson and Orval Bauer. The next card party will be held on Nov. 7. If you have any large Items that you would like to give away, please set them out at the curb by 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 1995. Please identify items to be "swapped" by tying a piece of material or a tag on it. All those looking for treasures MUST REMEMBER THAT ONLY THE ITEMS IDENTIFIED BY A TAG OR PIECE OF MATERIAL ARE AVAILABLE. If the items are not picked up, they will be taken to the landfill site on Wednesday, October 25th as part of large Item pick up day. If you don't want these items to go to the landfill site, please remove them from the curb Tuesday night. LARGE ITEM PICKUP DAY WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1995 IN THE VILLAGE OF BRUSSELS All items to be set out at the curb by 10:00 a.m. on this date.
