After viewing Laurence Fishbume's great performance in Bad Company
I decided to check out Just Cause "1/2 (Warner), a suspense thriller that
finds him co-starring with Sean Connery. Based on the best selling novel
by John Katzenbach, this tale of a man who continues to proclaim his
innocence after eight years on death row (Blair Underwood) comes to the
attention of a Harvard law professor (Connery) who agrees to re-examine
the case despite the protests of the original arresting officer (Fishburne).
Despite a wonderfully creepy performance by Ed Harris the film is a bit of
a disappointment as it becomes far too predictable. (Rated 14A)
Among the week's other new and unpreviewed releases are Bye, Bye
Love (Fox) a comedy that features Matthew Modine, Randy Quaid and
Paul Reiser as single dads who discover the joys of parenting and dating.
(Rated PG-13)
The busy Laurence Fishburne also appears in Higher Learning
(Columbia/Tristar) the latest drama from director John Singleton (Boyz In
The Hood) which focuses on escalating racial tensions on a college
campus. (Rated R)
In Suture (Malofilm) two brothers become caught up in a web of
treachery, passion and mistaken identities. (Rated R)
The laserdisc format continues to offer film fans some of the finest
releases of both classic and contemporary movies. The Voyager
Company's Criterion Collection again leads the way with newly
remastered special editions of Robocop and David Lean's Brief Encounter.
Although I have never cared for many of director Paul Verhoeven's
films, this unrated widescreen cut of Robocop *** is actually better than I
remembered the film to be when I first viewed it back in 1987. This disc
also includes many of the features we have come to expect from a
Criterion laserdisc like film-to-storyboard comparisons, extensive still
frame supplements and a screen specific second audio track commentary
with director Paul Verhoeven, co-writer Ed Neumeier and producer Jon
Davidson. Standard videocassette versions of Robocop and its two sequels
are available from Orion Home Video.
As for Brief Encounter ****, the superb 1945 film about a guilty love
affair written by. Noel Coward and directed by David Lean, Criterion has
happily given us a crisp and amazingly sharp new digital transfer.
Visually this version looks better than any others I have seen, especially
those inferior prints that show up on late night television. This disc also
features an interesting second audio track commentary by film historian
Bruce Eder and the original theatrical trailer.

Timing, timing, essence of good comedy
By Janice Becker
Timing, timing, timing; the
essences of a good comedy.
As usual, William Hutt as Sir
John Falstaff, in The Stratford Fes-
tival's production of The Merry
Wives of Windsor, has not only
captured the essence of comedy,
but incorporated it into every word,
action and facial movement he dis-
plays.
His portrayal of the slightly
intoxicated Falstaff makes every
turn of the phrase written by Shake-
speare that much more of an audi-
ence-grabber.
This summer, the Blyth Festival
Young Company is engaged in an
exciting process of producing a
premiere play Hee Hee; Tales
From The White Diamond
Mountain by M.J. Kang.
The play journeys through the
magical stories and culture of
Korea; these Korean tales are
1-lutt is remarkable with his sly,
devilish, chestershire cat smile. It is
understandable that the young Fal-
staff would have had a way with
the women.
Supported by a very strong cast,
Hutt trundles through the misad-
ventures of an over-the-hill, over-
weight, erroneously arrogant play-
boy.
Wrapped up in his own image of
his attractiveness to women, Fal-
staff soon falls into a trap so easily
triggered by a pair of ingenious and
mischievous wives, co-conspiring
to exact his downfall.
However, unbeknownst to the

gized with original music and mask

is busy bringing the script to life.

dramatic scenes and precision tim-
