Spring joy ride lands Blyth man in jail
A spring joyride has landed a
Blyth man in jail for 60 days fol-
lowing an appearance in Wing-
ham's provincial court July 26.
Presiding Judge R.G.E. Hunter
was told that on March 24 William
Watson and a friend took a pickup
from a residence, then later
returned it. The owner of the truck
had not noticed it was gone and
only after he was told by another
person that he saw the accused
driving it, did he learn that it had
been taken.
Watson pled not guilty to a theft
charge with regards to this incident.
He did plead guilty, however to a
charge of attempting to steal a vehi-
cle from a Blyth residence later that
same evening. The car's owner
found Watson sitting in the front
seat of her car, which was parked in
her driveway.
The crown said she confronted
Watson, who said the car belonged
to his girlfriend.
Defense counsel Phil Cornish
said that his client was under the
influence of alcohol at the time. He
also stressed that Watson had made
no move to drive the car. "There
was no evidence he was hot wiring
it, he was just sitting in the vehicle.
There is no evidence to that point
that he had taken steps to remove
the vehicle from the drive."
Watson has been taking some
counselling for his alcohol abuse.
Though his client does have a YO
record, Cornish asked the judge to
consider that there had been no
charges since Watson becoming an
adult.
Judge Hunter failed to see the
relevancy, however, saying that
with several charges as a young
offender he "should know better by
now".
Watson was given 30 days on
each count to be served consecu-
tively for a total of 60 days. He will
also be on probation for 12 months.

Jeffrey Brittenden pled guilty in
Wingham's provincial court July
26. The Crown told the court that
Brittenden had driven a 1989 Chev
pickup, valued at $6,000 to Grey
Twp. where it was dismantled.
Brittenden did not receive parts or
any profit from the sale of the parts.
The defense said that his 28-year-
old client had been out of work for
a brief time and was paid gas
money to move goods from one
place to another. He noted that
Brittenden had co-operated fully
with police since his arrest and has
no previous record.
"He realizes that through a
friendship he was drawn into some-
thing that has tarnished his record,"
defense concluded. Mitchell woman loses license
Judge R.G.E. Hunter was told
that on June 14 police were notified
of an impaired driver in Cranbrook.
After a witness pointed the vehicle
out to them, police stopped Karen

Breathalizer readings were 190
and 180.
There is a previous conviction in
Wingham court from Feb. 16 for
impaired operation of a motor vehi-
cle.
Defense noted that Michiel rec-
ognizes she has a problem and did
seek help following the last convic-
tion. She was abstinent for a num-
ber of months until this past May.
After being charged she has again
sought treatment from the Perth
Addiction Centre and has been not
drank since.
In addition to a two-year driving
prohibition Mieckle was sentenced
to 14 days in jail, to be served on
Saturdays and Sundays as she is
employed full time.
Driving while under suspension
resulted in a jail term for one man,
who appeared in Wingham's
provincial court, July 26.
