Barracudas happy with freestyle relay victory
On Saturday, July 29, the BMG
Barracudas travelled to Mitchell for
their third swim meet of the season.
Team members attending the meet
were Drew Thomas, Jessica Spink,
Michelle Smith, Aaron Richmond,
Matt Elliott, Katie Clark, Cassie
Bootzin, Christina DeWit, Cynthia
DeWit, Lisa Blake and coach Jay
Last Monday night, the Brussels
PeeWee boys ended their regular
season with a game against
Seaforth.
After Seaforth opened the
scoring with three runs in the top of
the first, Joel Kellington came
home on a Tyler Bragg double.
The home team added to their
lead in the second. Kellington,
Terry Nichol and Bragg scored on a
double by Nathan Garland. Garland
and Joshua Gropp came home
before the inning ended, giving the
home team a 6-3 lead.
After Kellington and Nichol
added two more in the third, the

Pre-Mites
The Brussels Pre-Mites II met up
with some ungracious visitors
when they hosted Belgrave I on
July 26 and were blasted 21-7.
While Belgrave tallied 12 runs in
the first two innings, then another
six in the top half of the third, it
took Brussels until the third to get
on the board. Scoring in that
innings were Chris Corbett, Cather-
ine Rushton, Jamie Crosby and
Cory Chapman.
Things evened out by the fourth
and fifth inning, however, with
each team adding just three more.
Adam Corbett blasted a homerun
for one of the fourth inning points,
while Christopher Jutzi scored the
other.
Tommy Cronin ended the scoring
in the fifth.

all gave their best effort, swimming
to a 10th place finish with 62
points.
The first points of the day were
delivered when the girls open 200
metre medley relay team swam to a
third place finish. The team
visitors began a strong comeback.
They scored four in the fourth and
two in the fifth. Their defense held
on for a heartbreaking 9-8 victory.
The PeeWees ended their regular
season with an eight win — six loss
record.
This past Monday evening, the
boys travelled to Mildmay to open
their WOAA playoff series. The
offense started off strongly, scoring
five in the top of the first inning.
Mark Kroll, Kellington, Bragg,
Jason Armstrong and Gropp scored
on two hits and some aggressive
base running.
Brussels added to their lead in
baton and flag and eighth in hoop
baton.

eight unanswered runs, and secured
a 14-9 victory.

Belgrave and Brussels continue

these girls also swam to a fourth
place finish in their freestyle relay.
The strength of the Barracudas
on this day was their backstroke.
Six team members brought home
ribbons from back crawl races.
Jessica Spink added a second place
ribbon to the third place she had
won earlier in her freestyle race.
Drew Thomas glided to another
fourth place finish, his third of the
summer, and Samantha Thomas
swam well enough to place fifth in
her backstroke. Matt Elliott had his
best finish of the season, a fourth
place finish, and Cynthia DeWit
had a fifth place finish. Coach Jay
Hahn placed first in his backstroke
race, then went on to third place
finishes in breaststroke and
butterfly.
The highlight of the day came in
the freestyle relays. The Barracudas
nine and 10-year-old girls team
surprised everyone by winning first
place in their race. This relay team
consisted of Jessica Spink, who
finished the day with three ribbons,
Rachel Elliott, Samantha Thomas
and Michelle DeWit.
The team will now spend the
next two weeks preparing for the
inter-county swim finals, which
will be held in Goderich on Aug.
12.
Coach Jay Hahn has high hopes
for the Barracudas final meet and is
optimistic that the team will have
its best showing of the summer.
