PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1995. Barracudas happy with freestyle relay victory On Saturday, July 29, the BMG Barracudas travelled to Mitchell for their third swim meet of the season. Team members attending the meet were Drew Thomas, Jessica Spink, Michelle Smith, Aaron Richmond, Matt Elliott, Katie Clark, Cassie Bootzin, Christina DeWit, Cynthia DeWit, Lisa Blake and coach Jay Last Monday night, the Brussels PeeWee boys ended their regular season with a game against Seaforth. After Seaforth opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first, Joel Kellington came home on a Tyler Bragg double. The home team added to their lead in the second. Kellington, Terry Nichol and Bragg scored on a double by Nathan Garland. Garland and Joshua Gropp came home before the inning ended, giving the home team a 6-3 lead. After Kellington and Nichol added two more in the third, the An Ethel area girl has twirled her way to the top of her chosen sport. Amy Thomas, 18-year-old daughter of Bob and Debbie Thomas of RR1 Ethel, achieved top 10 finishes in all the events she entered at the National World Open Championships for baton at Notre Dame University, South Bend, Indiana. Her finishes included first in two baton, third in x-strut, sixth in solo Belgrave blasts Brussels Pre-Mites The Brussels Pre-Mites II met up with some ungracious visitors when they hosted Belgrave I on July 26 and were blasted 21-7. While Belgrave tallied 12 runs in the first two innings, then another six in the top half of the third, it took Brussels until the third to get on the board. Scoring in that innings were Chris Corbett, Cather- ine Rushton, Jamie Crosby and Cory Chapman. Things evened out by the fourth and fifth inning, however, with each team adding just three more. Adam Corbett blasted a homerun for one of the fourth inning points, while Christopher Jutzi scored the other. Tommy Cronin ended the scoring in the fifth. Black flies prefer cool, fast running streams as breeding and hatching habitats. They lay up to 500 eggs at a time. Hahn. The 14 members of the team all gave their best effort, swimming to a 10th place finish with 62 points. The first points of the day were delivered when the girls open 200 metre medley relay team swam to a third place finish. The team visitors began a strong comeback. They scored four in the fourth and two in the fifth. Their defense held on for a heartbreaking 9-8 victory. The PeeWees ended their regular season with an eight win — six loss record. This past Monday evening, the boys travelled to Mildmay to open their WOAA playoff series. The offense started off strongly, scoring five in the top of the first inning. Mark Kroll, Kellington, Bragg, Jason Armstrong and Gropp scored on two hits and some aggressive base running. Brussels added to their lead in baton and flag and eighth in hoop baton. This is the second year Amy has competed at the national level, but her results were much improved Continued from page 9 one out in the seventh. Uhrig was two for three while Gary Pipe batted one for two. The last week of July is open for consisted of Cynthia DeWit swimming backstroke, Christina DeWit swimming breaststroke, Lisa Blake swimming butterfly, and Cassie Bootzin swimming freestyle. The girls third place finish was a great accomplishment since this relay team had not swam together before. Later in the day, the second, after Mildmay scored one in their half of the first. Kellington and Bragg scored on sacrifices by Armstrong and Gropp. In the next few innings, Mildmay scored five, however, before Brussels could tally any more. In the top of the fifth, Gropp and Nichol scored on a Nichol homerun. However, the defense could not hold against the good- hitting Mildmay squad, who scored eight unanswered runs, and secured a 14-9 victory. The second game of the best-of- three series is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday night, in Brussels. this year. "I was very happy with my plac- ing," beamed Amy. Belgrave and Brussels continue to battle for first place with each team having four losses. these girls also swam to a fourth place finish in their freestyle relay. The strength of the Barracudas on this day was their backstroke. Six team members brought home ribbons from back crawl races. Jessica Spink added a second place ribbon to the third place she had won earlier in her freestyle race. Drew Thomas glided to another fourth place finish, his third of the summer, and Samantha Thomas swam well enough to place fifth in her backstroke. Matt Elliott had his best finish of the season, a fourth place finish, and Cynthia DeWit had a fifth place finish. Coach Jay Hahn placed first in his backstroke race, then went on to third place finishes in breaststroke and butterfly. The highlight of the day came in the freestyle relays. The Barracudas nine and 10-year-old girls team surprised everyone by winning first place in their race. This relay team consisted of Jessica Spink, who finished the day with three ribbons, Rachel Elliott, Samantha Thomas and Michelle DeWit. The team will now spend the next two weeks preparing for the inter-county swim finals, which will be held in Goderich on Aug. 12. Coach Jay Hahn has high hopes for the Barracudas final meet and is optimistic that the team will have its best showing of the summer.
