Duane Buffinga, a member of the Blyth Squirts, got down and dirty to kick the ball away
from his opponent. He and his mates battled with the visiting Wingham team in Belgrave on

While the final four games of the
regular season saw the first and
only loss, the Blyth Mosquito team
had three other convincing wins to
end the year.
On June 29, they travelled to
Clinton to face the Cannons, and
while they put up a stubborn fight,
Blyth took a 6-0 victory. The first
goal was by Tom Egli, benefitting
from a nice pass play from Dave
Ansley and Jeremy Van
Amersfoort.
The second came soon after as
Clarence Bosma headed an Aaron
Bakker pass over the Clinton
keeper. Another offensive passing
run saw Van Amersfoort score with
a long field goal kick from midway
up the Clinton half, receiving the
ball from Pauline Blok and Becky
Archambault, the other halfbacks.
Bakker pocketed his own goal
next with a nice ground shot with
passing assists from Darwin
Buffmga and Bosma.
In the second half, Emily
Slotegraaf added a fifth marker
when, after receiving a clearing
pass from Blok in her own end, she
did a long field run up to score.
Lastly, Van Amersfoort picked
up his second goal on a pass from
Ansley and Slotegraaf.
The next Thursday saw the team
a little flat as, short handed, they
hosted the Goderich Lions team
and lost 2-0.
After a two week break, they
again met the Wingham Flyers at
home, and won a crushing 9-0
victory! VanAmersfoort scored five
minutes in with a long field kick,
followed quickly by Blok from a
running feed-in pass from
Slotegraaf.
VanAmersfoort notched another
from Tom and Tim Robinson, with
Tim then scoring also off of a
Wingham goalie kick.
VanAmersfoort finished the first
half with a goal from Buffinga and
Belgrave Squirts
take opener
In the first game of Squirt
WOAA playdowns, Brussels was
edged by Belgrave in Belgrave on
July 3.
Bryce Wedow got Brussels on
the board in the first, but Belgrave
managed three in the home half to
leap ahead.
Robbie Kerr crossed the plate for
Brussels in the second, but Bel-
grave widened its edge with two
more.
Each team was shut out in the
third, then when Brussels failed to
score in the fourth, Belgrave
showed no mercy slamming in two
more for a five point spread.
Brussels started to turn it around
shutting Belgrave down in the next
two innings, while lobbing three to
close the gap, but it was too little,
too late. Scoring for Brussels were
Matt McCall, Brian Oldfield and
Matt Kroll.
Robbie Kerr went the distance
pitching the complete game.
This best of three series will
wrap up in Brussels with the next
two games, if needed, being played
there.
Bakker, and an unassisted corner
kick goal.
Tom Robinson also got on the
board with assists from Blok and
Teaguen Onn in the early second
half, and VanAmersfoort finished
the scoring with two more, one
from a deflection off the goalie,
and lastly from a passing setup
from Bosma and Ansley.
The final game was on July 27 at
Lucknow against the team Blyth
had beat in the season opener. This
game was no exception with a goal
in five minutes by Slotegraaf,
assisted by Tom Robinson and
VanAmersfoort.
Shortly after, Ansley pounded the
second in on passes from Bosma
and Bakker, ending the first half.
Lucknow revived in the second
half, scoring two quick goals on a
new keeper, though Blyth
maintained a one goal lead when
Van Amersfoort scored a penalty
kick on a hand ball, and Ansley
ensured the win in the last second
of play on a pass from Blok who in
turn, had capitalized on a chest stop
of a goal kick by Tom Robinson.
A very exciting finale to the
season and the last game!
The tournament is on Aug. 12 in
Goderich, first game at 9 a.m. at the
high school. With eight wins, one
tie, and one loss in regular season
play, Blyth should have a good
chance at placing well.
Sixteen of the best men's fastball
teams in southwestern Ontario will
arrive Aug. 4, 5, 6 and 7 to
participate in the annual Brussels
invitational tournament.
What started as a 10 team, single
loss elimination, sponsored by the
Brussels Recreation Board is
beginning its 24th season.
In its second year the tournament
saw the arrival of Fullarton and
Walton, two teams who have
participated every year since. Jim
Skinner was a member on the first
Fullarton team and (although he
defected to Sebringville for a
couple of seasons), will return for
his 23rd appearance.
Wingham BP's dominated in the
late 70s and are the only team to
win three consecutive
championships (1978-79-80). The
1979 final was one of the best
games ever played with the BP's
edging Sebringville 1-0 in 15
innings.
Ritchie's Rockets are the only
Brussels team to have won a
championship. The 1973 Rockets
were B champions, defeating
Conroy 7-4.
The following year the Rockets
lost in the B final 2-1 to Elmira,
while 1984 saw the Brussels Tigers
lose to Sebringville, also in the
consolation final.
The tournament has not been
without problems including no
shows, teams defaulting due to
player shortage and the 1981 hiatus
for the Morris Twp. centennial.
However, 1985 is the only year
championship finals were not
played, in that case due to rain.
This season has a local touch
with eight of the 16 clubs within 20
miles of Brussels. Representing the
Bluewater Fastball League are the
Belmore Stingers, Belmore
Steelhawks and Wingham Colts.
Huron County League teams
include the Brussels Tigers,
Brussels Bulldogs, Walton,
Monkton and Belgrave.
South Perth returnees include
Mitchell Mets, Fullarton,
Sebringville Anaf, Shakespeare
Sox and St. Pauls.
Kitchener-Waterloo Pride,
London Gators, and Camlachie
Rebels fill out the roster.
Games start Friday at 7:30 with
the tournament championship game
scheduled for 6 p.m Monday night.
Bob Pegg, coach of the Belgrave
Blue Devils has been on tourna-
ment champion teams with three
different clubs — Stratford, Wing-
ham and Bluevale.
