Buzzing in
Emily Slotegraaf, 13, a member of the Blyth Mosquitoes
takes the ball up the field, while two Wingham Flyers
move in to try to intercept in the action last Thursday night
at East Wawanosh Public School. The Blyth team weren't
the most gracious of hosts, trouncing the visitors in a 9-0
shutout.

The Brussels Tigers improved
their Huron County Fastball record
to 14 wins - four losses and remain
tied with Belgrave for first place in
league play.
Friday night the Tigers edged the
Lieury Red Sox 2-1 in a game
dominated by two of the league's
premier pitchers.
Derwyn Hodgins of the Red Sox
struck out 13 Tigers, including
seven of the first 10 faced, while
allowing seven baserunners. Todd
Uhrig pitched a three hit, 10 strike
This past week, the Brussels
PeeWee boys succeeded in
recording two wins, upping their
record to 8-5.
On Tuesday night, they travelled
to Listowel and played their best
game of the season. Brussels
opened the scoring with two runs in
the top of the first, when Mark
Kroll and Joshua Gropp came in to
score.
The visitors added one in each of
the next five innings.
Gerry Nichol and Joel Kellington
scored in the second and third
before Listowel tied the game in
their half of the third.
After Mike Cooper and Chris
Mason scored for Brussels in the
fourth and fifth innings
respectively, Listowel came back
again to tie the score in the bottom
of the fifth.

Wednesday night the Tigers
defeated Zurich 11-1. Steve and
Tim Fritz each batted four for four
while Brett Clarkson was three for
three.
Doug Conley took the win
allowing four hits.
Thursday night the Tigers end
their schedule in Hensall against
the Francistown Flyers.
Nichol came home in the top of
the sixth, and once again gave
Brussels the lead. Listowel
threatened in their half of the
inning, but the defense held and
secured a victory for the Brussels
team.
On Thursday, the boys continued
their winning ways against Ethel.
Thirteen runs were scored by
Brussels in the first two innings, by
Kellington (two), Gropp (two),
Tyler Bragg (two), Nathan Garland
(two), Patrick Gilkes (two), Kriss
Kroll (two), and Justin Ruttan
(two).
The strong offense continued in
the third and fourth innings where
14 more runs were scored.,
The defense held Ethel to three
runs and the boys returned home
with a 27-3 victory.
In Seaforth at their second meet,
Saturday, July 22, the Brussels
Barracudas swam their way up
from 10th to ninth of the eleven
teams there.
The first event was the medley
relays. Brussels had two teams in
this event. The 11 and 12-year-old
girls did not place but did a great
job. Team members were Michelle
DeWit (backstroke), Katie Clark
(breaststroke), Jessica Spink
(butterfly) and Samantha Thomas
(freestyle).
The open girls team finished
third. They are: Ashley Gropp
(backstroke), Stacy Hahn (breast-
stroke), Trisha Bonsma ('fly), and
Cynthia DeWit (freestyle).
Brussels' next event was free-
style. Drew Thomas, Jessica Spink,
Aaron Richmond, Michelle DeWit,
Samantha Thomas, Matthew
Elliott, Katie Clark, Ashley Gropp,
Trisha Bonsma, Cynthia DeWit,
and Jay Hahn competed in these
races. In their categories, Trisha
placed fifth, Jay placed third, and
Jessica placed first.
Backstroke was after freestyle
and Drew Thomas, Jessica Spink,
Aaron Richmond, Michelle Smith,
Michelle DeWit, Matthew Elliott,
Samantha Thomas, Ashley Gropp,
Jay Hahn, and Christina DeWit
raced. Matthew and Christina each
placed sixth, Drew placed fourth,
Jay placed second, and Jessica
placed first.
Matthew Elliott, Katie Clark, Jay
Hahn, and Christina DeWit were
the Barracudas' competitors in
breaststroke. Jay placed second.
Barracudas participating in the
'fly races were Jessica Spink,
Samantha Thomas, Matthew
Elliott, Katie Clark, Jay Hahn, and
Trisha Bonsma..Trish placed third,
Jay placed second, and Jessica
Spink placed first.
In the final event, the freestyle
relays, Michelle DeWit joined with
three girls from the Lucknow team.
They placed fifth. Also competing
were Christina DeWit, Ashley
Gropp, Cynthia DeWit, and Trisha
Bonsma in the open girls category.
They placed third.
