Leading off this week's new releases is Cobb ***1/2 (Warner), the
electrifying biography of baseball's greatest player and meanest SOB. The
story follows a sports writer (Robert Wuhl) commissioned by Cobb to tell
his life story, leaving out, of course, most of his private life as an abusive
husband, womanizer and generally unpleasant human being. Tommy Lee
Jones gives a bravura performance as Ty Cobb in this never dull and
always fascinating film. (Rated R) Not recommended for children even if
they are baseball fans.
Another fascinating film is Death and the Maiden **** (Alliance),
Roman Polanski's intense adaptation of the award winning play by Ariel
Dorfman. The story takes place in an unnamed Latin American country
and focuses on a Government official (Stuart Wilson) and his wife
(Sigoumey Weaver), a woman who believes the guest (Ben Kingsley) in
their home is the same man who raped and tortured her years before.
Sigourney Weaver gives the best performance of her career as the woman
whose brutal revenge may or may not be, on the right man. Highly
recommended. (Rated R)
Also worth a look is Squanto: A Warrior's Tale *** (Disney), a saga set
in the 1600s about a Native American warrior who is captured and sent to
England as a slave. Escaping his captors Squanto fights to make his way
back across the ocean to rejoin his people. (Rated PG)
Among this week's other new and unpreviewed releases are several
critically acclaimed films including Camilla (Malofilm), a drama about
two female musicians. Jessica Tandy (in her final film) plays an aging
violinist who meets and affects the life of a younger musician (Bridget
Fonda). Others in the cast are Graham Greene, Maury Chakin and Elias
Koteas. (Rated PG)
Oleanna (Malofilm) is based on the highly controversial play by David
Mammet and tells the story of a shy student who turns the tables on a
manipulative professor by accusing him of sexual harassment. (Rated R)
Donald Sutherland and Stephen Rea headline the cast of Citizen X
(HBO) a made for cable thriller about the search for the former Soviet
Union's most notorious serial killer. (Unrated)
For those of you who missed the television broadcast of Scarlet! (Cabin
Fever) this Gone With The Wind sequel starring Joanne Whalley-Kilmer
and Timothy Dalton is now available at your local video store.
Columbia/Tristar has just released six feature length Three Stooges
films. The titles which sell for $14.95 each include, Around The World In
A Daze, Have Rocket Will Travel, The Outlaws Is Coming, Three Stooges
In Orbit, Stop, Look And Laugh, and my favourite The Three Stooges
Meet Ilercules. (Unrated)

QUEBEC 95
By Crystal Gulutzen
On Sunday morning at 5:45 our
class had to meet the bus at our
school, Grey Central, to prepare for
the 12-hour journey to Quebec.
We arrived at the Laval Univer-
sity at 6:30 that night. Laval is
where we stayed. After we got
there we grabbed our bathing suits
and caps and went swimming.
The next morning we got out the
list of "Things To Do" and we
prepared for the places we were
going to see.
The places we saw as a class
were very interesting places. They
The Festival of Arts and Crafts is
an annual show which this year
features over 165 craft display and
demonstrations. It will be held in
Courthouse Park on the Square in
Goderich from Friday, July 7 to
Sunday, July 9.
Artisans, craftspeople and
painters from all over Ontario come
to Goderich to display and sell their
creations. There are special
displays, food events, sidewalk
sales and dozens of other tourist
attractions in this picturesque and
historic Port town.
As part of the Festival of Arts
and Crafts there is a fish fry
sponsored by the Shriners to be
held on the Friday night and a
Book Sale on Saturday and Sunday
also in the park. There will be
children's entertainers throughout
were the Citadelle, Huron Wendat
Village of Wendake, Chute Ste-
Anne at the Grand Canyon,
Montmorency Falls, Ste-Anne-de-
Beaupre, Atelier Pare, and Chez
Marie. We had to speak French
when we ordered our food and
sometimes this was difficult but it
gave us good practice.
They were all exciting places to
visit and I wouldn't mind going on
this school trip again.
Our teachers, Mrs. Colquhoun
and Mrs. McKee planned a trip
filled with sightseeing and fun.
Some parent chaperones also
helped out. They were Mrs.
Bowles, Mrs. Cdchrane, Mrs.
Fischer, Mrs. Gulutzen, Mr.
