Work of county artists highlights fall tour
Artists from across the county open their
homes and studios each fall to invite the
public to view works in progress as well as
complete works of art, varying from
paintings and sculptures to glass designs,
pottery and blacksmithing.
The Huron Society of Artists' Studio Tour
has become an increasingly popular event,
drawing more artisans to the show and larger
numbers of observers.
Six of the 12 studios involved in the tour
are situated along the Lake Huron shoreline
or within minutes of the beaches.
Gwen Smithors-Kiar, watercolourist, and
George Zoethout, photo artist, are both
located in Goderich.
Smithers-Kiar, who displays her works
year-round at The Gallery in the Garden, is a
commercial artist graduate and welcomes
portraits and special commissions.
Situated on Hwy 21 north, just a block
from Goderich Square, the studio is open all
year.
Mixing everyday photo images into an
array of fantasy-inspired scenes, Zoethout
creates unique pieces of artwork. He
incorporates burning, weaving, painting,
cutting, smearing and rubbing into his work.
Zoethout can be found on Oxford Street,
by chance or appointment.
Heading east on Hwy. 8, the traveller will
encounter Sharp's Creek Forge, where James
Wallace produces a wide variety of custom
lighting fixtures, fire tools, fences and gates.
The Bayfield area offers a sculptor/painter,
potter and glass artist/weaver for the visitors'
perusal.
Just north of town on Hwy 21, Leda
McAlister displays a selection of bronze,
wood or clay sculptures as well as her
paintings, at Gallery on the Bluff.
The works may be viewed by chance or
appointment, April through December.

10 miles offshore during the summer
months.
Yellow perch, smallmouth bass and
sunfish are taken from late spring to early
fall along the entire shoreline. Most fishing
for these species takes place on piers and at
river mouths.
During the spring, both smelt and suckers
are netted along the lakeshore and in the
mouths of many streams.
The launching areas on Lake Huron are
both privately and publicly maintained, so a
launching fee may be charged. Depending
Within the Village of Bayfield, Sylva
Leser creates individual pieces of stoneware
and porcelain along with domestic ware. All
the items are wheel-thrown or hand-built
then fired in an electric kiln.
Her gallery-shop Avanti-Leser, is open
year-round.
The Tinker Shoppe Studio/ Gallery,
located on Catherine Street features the
works of James and Kim Howlett.
Restoring century-old windows, creating
contemporary designs, carving heavy plate
glass or stone and constructing free-form
sculptures, the talents of James Howlett
knows no limits.
Kim Howlett utilizes recycled fabric,
natural fibres and hand-spun yarns to make
both off-loom hangings and weavings on the
loom, in artistic and functional styles.
The shop is open year-round.
In the Blyth area, Ron and Bev Walker
offer art fans paintings in oil, pastels and ink
as well as fabric and fibre creations.
A long-time art educator, the application
of brush to canvas by Mr. Walker brings
forth landscapes and figurative imagery.
The Walker Studio, open by appointment,
can be found by travelling west of Blyth on
County Road 25, turning right at the second
sideroad, then north to the first driveway
over the bridge.
Also situated in East Wawanosh
Township, Jo Manning, an international
award winner, puts her lifetime of
experience in printmaking to work
producing paintings and ink drawings.
To reach The Swamp, turn north at the
third sideroad west of Blyth off County
Road 25 or two east of Auburn, pass the first
intersection and The Swamp is the first
home, on the left. It is open by chance or
appointment.
William Creighton's and Philip and Pauli
on weather conditions, small boats may be
launched in the mouth of the Nine Mile
River at Port Albert or carried over the
beach to the lake.
As much of the property is privately
owned, permission should always be
obtained.
All cold water river and stream fish
prefer water with mid-summer temperatures
of less than 20°C (68°F).
These spring fed streams are concentrated
in a belt from Bayfield, at Lake Huron
inland through to Wingham.
The warm water river andlake fish are
generally found in water where summer
temperatures exceed 20°C. Lakelet Lake,
Sommer's studios are located in the north of
Huron County.
Creighton, a watercolourist, creates
visions of local landscapes, wildlife and
flowers from his personal experiences.
He has been involved in the protection of
the environment for 25 years through his
donations of works to environmental groups.
Forest Edge Studio, open by chance or
appointment, is located two roads south of
Lucknow on County Road 1, then 1/4 mile
east at Belfast.

near Clifford, Lake Wawanosh and the
Morrison Dam, as well as the main river
sections of the Maitland and Bayfield Rivers
represent the most significant areas for this
type of fishing.
Winter fishing is commonly practised on
Lakelet Lake as well as the mouths of the
Bayfield and Maitland Rivers. During the
winter northern pike, yellow perch and
panfish can be caught in the inland lakes as
well as the river mouths.
Fish santcuaries have been established to
provide extra protection for fish when
spawning. Along the Nine Mile River, a year
round sanctuary has been established 100
metres above the Port Albert Fishway.

km. north of Hwy. 8 on McKillop Road 10
(six km. east of Seaforth). It is open by
chance or appointment.
The quality of Tetu's high-fired porcelain,
stoneware and raku pottery is uncom-
promising.
Displayed in Ontario and Quebec
galleries, his work has earned many/awards.
Special commissions such as custom
dinner services and liturgical pieces are
welcome.
