Coincidentally in 1992 and 1993 attendance also fell dramatically. Last year the festival board of directors brought back Janet Amos who worked in her magic once again, breathing enthusiasm and hope back into the festival. The 1994 season was a heralded success, with sellout attendance figures for many of the productions, and a profit. This year's season, which opens June 14, promises to be just as good with ticket sales going well. The opener is billed as a "passionate tale of love, ambition and betrayal set during prohibition years". Ballad for a Rum Runner's Daughter is written by Laurie Fyffe with music by Beth Bartley. Early reports say the set is spectacular. One of the plays from the early years is making its return to Blyth. The Tomorrow Box, by Anne Chislett is the story of a Huron County farmwife who divorces her husband when he decides to retire and sell the farm without consulting her. Though it debuted at the Kawartha Festival in Lindsay, the Blyth production in the late 70s brought it to a much broader audience. The Tomorrow Box was soon on the playbill of theatres across North America. It has been translated into Japanese and struck a chord there with 100,000 Japanese having seen the play over the years. It comes back to Blyth from June 20 to Aug. 26. Norah Harding has penned the third offering of the season. This Year, Next Year, is a story of a mother and her three daughters' survival during the final days of World War II. It opens July 18 and runs until Aug. 25. Jake's Place is a new play written by Amos's husband, Blyth favourite Ted Johns. It tells the story of Jake Palmer, a loner, who lives on the edge of town until his battle for a driveway puts him up against town politics. Jake's opens July 25 and runs until Aug. 26. The final production in Blyth's 1995 season is a return of a return. Johns' He Won't Come In From the Barn, was brought back to the Blyth stage last year and was such a success that it enjoyed an extended run and is closing the 1995 season, The story of Aylmer Clarke, who holes up in his barn, is billed as "an agricultural comedy for cynical times." It opens Aug. 29 wraps up the Festival season on Sept. 9.
