For a taste of something different, a stop at
A World of Goods in Exeter will lead
visitors into a world of exquisitely
handcrafted articles from around the globe.
Created by the blind and disabled from
developing countries, the variety of items
ranges from wooden animal carvings to
wicker creations and children's toys.
The Christian Blind Mission International
(CBMI) Gift Store is a non-profit
organization which supports the work of
these gifted artists by providing a Canadian
market.
The aim of CBMI is to create
opportunities for the handicapped in
developing countries, often the poorest in
poor nations. Rehabilitation and education
centres are provided where they may receive
special skills training.
The training centres allow the disabled to
overcome their limitations, producing
beautifully crafted items. The visually
impaired weave carpets, the hearing
impaired design floral cards and victims of
leprosy paint ornaments.
As an added bonus to shopping at CBMI's
World of Goods Gift Store, the prices are
very reasonable with volunteers helping to
keep costs down. One customer said, ''When
you pick an item off the shelf, you expect to
see double the price."
Just a few of the articles available at the
store include wicker baskets, vases, wooden
carvings of ducks and elephants, ornaments,
jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets and
earrings, wooden children's toys and fabric
purses.
A World of Goods is located at 293 Main
Street, Exeter.
