4 Generations
in the
Insurance
Business
Elliott Insurance Brokers Limited
Serving your community since 1910
Businesses come and businesses go so
there are few that, like Elliott Insurance
Brokers Ltd., can boast of nearly 80 years'
operation by one family.
The fourth generation of the Elliott family is
now playing a major part in the running of the
business. Today, Rick Elliott and his father
John operate the business that was started in
1910 by J. H. R. Elliott.
The founder came to Blyth and purchased
The Blyth Standard, a book and stationery
store, and two small insurance agencies.
Later, the newspaper was sold and the two
insurance agencies were amalgamated.
Gordon Elliott joined his father's business
in 1936 and operated in partnership with J. H.
R until the father's death in 1955. Gordon
said he got into the business by accident.
"When I came out of Grade 13 in 1934 I
worked at a garage. I started in insurance
when my father needed someone to help him
with the business. I came because 9,f
necessity and I've never been sorry for it."
In turn, Gordon's son John joined the
company in 1959, becoming a licenced agent
in 1961. "It was my desire to go into the
insurance business when I was going through
school," John said. "I decided in Grade 9."
In 1983 the fourth generation, Rick
graduated from Mohawk College after
switching to insurance administration from
business accounting.
Elliott Insurance Brokers Limited is now
represented by three qualified and registered
insurance brokers - John Elliott (1961), Rick
Elliott (1983), Barb Snell (1982) and three
support staff . Betsy Allan, Jackie Lantinga
and Rhonda Stadelman
