The fourth generation of the Elliott family is now playing a major part in the running of the business. Today, Rick Elliott and his father John operate the business that was started in 1910 by J. H. R. Elliott. The founder came to Blyth and purchased The Blyth Standard, a book and stationery store, and two small insurance agencies. Later, the newspaper was sold and the two insurance agencies were amalgamated. Gordon Elliott joined his father's business in 1936 and operated in partnership with J. H. R until the father's death in 1955. Gordon said he got into the business by accident. "When I came out of Grade 13 in 1934 I worked at a garage. I started in insurance when my father needed someone to help him with the business. I came because 9,f necessity and I've never been sorry for it." In turn, Gordon's son John joined the company in 1959, becoming a licenced agent in 1961. "It was my desire to go into the insurance business when I was going through school," John said. "I decided in Grade 9." In 1983 the fourth generation, Rick graduated from Mohawk College after switching to insurance administration from business accounting.
